KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
You wanted pics of this? now you got em. The "traditional" KNO3 smoke ratio is this: KNO3/Sugar 60%/40% Zero had a faster burning "revised" recipie that was like this: KNO3/Sugar 70%/30% Its up to you what one you want to use. Anyways, I found that ICING SUGAR works best for the smoke recipie, instead of regular sugar. Here I made a small demonstration batch. here they are mixed. ==== You slowly heat the mixture over a flame STIR CONSTANTLY. In this pic, you see the stuff is starting to melt together. Don't let it get too hot (it will turn black and smoke) or else it will all ignite. ===== Here is the finished mix. While it is still warm you can put it into a contaner, and it will harden into the contaner shape. ===== it burns pretty fast, and puts out a lot of smoke, but watch out for hot bits that are spat out.

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
could you add the Kno3 in after the sugar has melted (to prevent it from "blowing up " in your face) or does it have to be while it is melting
please tell me where i can easly obtain kno3. is it an ingredient in anything or do you have to buy it from a chemist?

rat_bastard Thanks for the smoke info I was looking for that.
scythe You can get KNO3 at a pharmacy. They might know it as salt peter but it's the same thing.

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
You wont find kno3 in any chemists here in australia. Tell me where u are and i might be able to help. You can however buy it from butchers (some of them, vinigar and salt is replacing "salt peter aks butchers salt"). I bought a 25kg bag for 30 bucks and im really happy with my batch. Something u can buy from a chemist is potassium permangate wich is better then kno3. However it costs a bloody fortinue ($5 for 25gram).

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
so powdered sugar is or is not the same thing? i was under the impression that it was, but someone just said its not.
and if it is the same, then could i do this: 70% potassium permanagate(i know its expensive, but i cant get potassium nitrate), and 30% powdered sugar? would that work, even if its crappy? i think it would, but im not completely sure.

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
indead, powderd sugar is just sugar but the powder will fly in the air and catch flame easily.

What are you talking about? sugar does not flame up like flour does. I took some of the icing sugar and threw it up in the air (so it made a cloud) and it didnot ignite when I lit it. It's safe, I have made it many times and I have never had it blow up while making it.

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
In regards to the potassium permanganate mixture:
I think you would have to use less oxidizer and more sugar. Permanganates are more powerful oxidizers than nitrates. Also keep in mind that the permanagate smoke mixture (if it works) could be unstable - Permanaganates and oragnic compounds (sugar) generally don't mix well, nor do permanganates and moisture...

...now what are other 'conventional' uses for kno3...?
It's much help to have a small talk backup story when, well, anyone, bothers you.

Thats right! I ground a small amount of permanganate & sugar in a mortar & pestel (to see how friction/impact sensitive) and it crackled and caught on fire

Re: KNO3 smoke (by popular demand)
so we saying like 40% potperm and 60% sugar, 50%/50%, or even 30%/70%? ill probably have to experiment with it, but im curious so i could maybe not waste my time doing so.
