What do you get if you mix iodine and ammonia water/cloudy ammonia. I read this from a text file at textfiles.org, but I havent been able to find any other sources which describe the results. The file said that if you mix them, leave them in a warm place overnight, then filter it through a coffee filter, you get these fine crystals which are somewhat unstable and rather explosive.I really dont feel like losing a hand or face from bad information, so any assistance is appreciated.

Ammonium Tri-iodine, supposedly. I wouldn't mess with the stuff, if I were you.

This makes Ammonium Tri-Iodide. It is insanely unstable. The slightest touch or breeze will set it off. It's own weight will set it off also. You can make it if you want, it's not too suicidal. Just be careful and treat it with respect. It's fun to screw around with; maybe put some in electrical tape, and throw it. But, as i said- Treat it with respect.

ok if your making Ammonium Tri-Iodide make it in very small amounts if your using house hold ammonia it will be slightly more stable then if you are useing ammonia hydroxide (never use this it is very freaky stuff) if you use ammonia hydroxide it will detonate under it own weight if you use the house hold stuff it will not but it will still be very unstable the only time it is stable is when it is wet once it is dry you only have about a week before it starts to decompose
umm what else is there oh yeah when this stuff "explodes" it does not create flame heat or any thing all it does is sublimate veary quickly (basicly it turns from a solid to a gas and then back into straight iodine) when it goes off all you see is cloud of purple dust and hear pretty good bang and leaves a purple stain one the ground umm thats all i can thing of right now but if i think of more i shall post it

warweed- isn't household ammonia Ammonium Hydroxide? Ammonium Hydroxide is simply Ammonia gas in water...

You must be referring to Industrial Strength ammonia cleaner.

yeah when im talking ammonia hydroxide im talking like industrial strength like they use in bleaching wood that stuff is very strong but in house hold ammonia there are things like soaps smells (in some)and other products
