Backyard Ballistics This forum is dedicated to the safe teaching and responsible handling of high and low explosives. You will not find any information on how to make "bombs" or any such device(s) . Backyard ballistics will teach you the science and the art of pyrotechnics and how to manufacture and use explosives/pyrotechnics safely and responsibly. Backyard ballistics is also a haven for rocketry and pneumatic cannons. All information contained within this forum is for educational purposes ONLY. -i didnt write any of this so im not taking credit, just showing it to ya. its slightly complicated, but im sure u can make sense of it.

ATOMIC BOMB
or A-bomb, weapon deriving its explosive force from the release of atomic energy through the fission (splitting) of heavy nuclei.

HYDROGEN BOMB or NEUTRON BOMB,
weapon deriving a large portion of its energy from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen isotopes. In an atomic bomb, uranium or plutonium is split into lighter elements that together weigh less than the original atoms, the remainder of the mass appearing as energy. Unlike this fission bomb, the hydrogen bomb functions by the fusion, or joining together, of lighter elements into heavier elements. The end product again weighs less than its components, the difference once more appearing as energy. Because extremely high temperatures are required in order to initiate fusion reactions, the hydrogen bomb is also known as a thermonuclear bomb.

You are almost right, Antichrist, exept that the term 'neutromn bombe' referst o anit mattrer charges (anti neutrons are the easiest to manufacture and suspend anti matter).

Sorry, I am shtifaecd drunk (two pints of Jack Daniels. go f9igure)

arr isnt a nutron bomb just a nuclear device coated in i think graphite so that only the nutrons escape. that way it will kill everything living without destorying buildings

Yes you have given good simple descriptions of atomic (fission) bombs and hydrogen(fusion) bombs. Warweed if you want a more complicated version I could go into the nuclear physics involved, <smug grin>. A "neutron" Bomb is as far as I know simply a term used in science fiction. There is no such thing as a "neutron bomb" nor is there any bomb out there that releases primarily neutrons.

snake you talk about antimatter as they make it all the time.. Really it is bloody difficult and no one has contained any amount of antimatter in stable storage for any lenght of time.

A fission bomb releases approx. 1% of the mass as energy.

A fusion bomb releases approx. 2% of the mass as energy(thus by weight 2X as powerful.

An antimatter device(if ever created) converts mass to energy at 100% efficiency. Thus a bomb of a few kilos of antimatter could carve the world a new asshole. A pea sized chunk (of antimatter) could level a city.
