Re: crator makers from rocket motors
Estes rocket engines are in several different kinds
A , B, C , D
D's will give you the most black powder.
You can use that powder to fill a C02 cartarge to make a cratermaker.
Estes rocket engines, all have 3 stages: -thrust (black powder) -delay (smoke stuff) -eject (coarse black powder)
BUT there is one type that Is one that I commonly use that is called a C-6-0 It has 2 stages: -thrust (black powder) -eject (coarse black powder but with no clay)
The advantage of a C-6-0 is that it can light another rocket (so that would be a 2 stage rocket).
So what you can do is stick a cratermaker on top of a C-6-0, and you got yourself a rocket propelled cratermaker!

Re: crator makers from rocket motors
Provided it flies properly.
When I used rocket motors, back in the dark ages, I used C-6-3 motors. They give you the most powder for your dollar, since the D motors are exponentially more expensive, especially when you consider the amount of powder you get from them.
Use a hacksaw to cut a slot in the cardboard casing of the engine, lengthwise, Peel the paper off in a spiral until you are left with a hard black thing. This is solidified black powder. The grey parts are clay and should be discarded.
I grind engines by putting them in plastic bags and beating them to hell with a hammer. Don't worry- Engine powder is not shock sensitive.
IT will take about two C size motors to fill a nitrous oxide cartridge, and probably three or so to fill a CO2 cartridge.
