Default C4 grade plastic explosives

okay a friend was telling em up north soem kid told him abotu this and he wants to try. i think it wont work. he got what he needs, and is going to try tommorrow.

materials:

ice pack (the kind u breaka nd they get cold)lighter fluid
vasalene
plastic wrap
blasting cap or cherry bomb

proccess:

cut the ice pak open and take outt he crystals. dont break the water bag. mash up the crystals into a fine powder (from what i believe theyre ammonia nitrate crystals or something) and then add 1tbs of lighter fluid per bags worth of crystals. then mix around. thena dd soem vasalene. this is supposed to coat the crystals and keep them from further moisture. plop the whole mess onto some plastic wrap, and set ur blasting cap or cherry bomb, or black cat or whatever into the middle (if using a cheery bomb of sorts, i think you should put a bit of plastic wrap around itt o keep it from gettign wet) and wrap up everything with a wick sticking out. extend the wick or whatever, i dont suggest that you keep it small if it will work. find a deserted, dry area, and test fire.

would this infact work? like i said, sounds like b/s to me, but some of the most simple things in the world seem to work. whatever, gimme ur ideas. like i said, i think the crystals are ammonia nitrate. and the reason its called plastic explosives is cuz u add the vasalene which makes it plasticy i guess. whatever, just lemme know what u think.

Hmmm. I dont think that that's going to work, primarily because the Vaseline is so gooey and shit, not flammable, and it's covering the crystals. Might as well just be using rocks. The only thing that's probably going to happen is that the cherry bomb will set off the lighter fluid. Doesnt seem reasonable, though... but as you said, even the simplest things work.

The contents of said coldpacks is ammonium nitrate, which is by itself a very insenstitive high explosive. This fool likely seeks to plasticise it with the vaseline, but this will serve only to make the ammonium nitrate even less sensitive. You will NOT set off an ammonium nitrate based explosive with a cherry bomb, ever. Don't waste your time. You will need a hefty blasting cap filled with a suitable primary explosive and more than likely a booster to set it off.

Yes, it dose have potentail to work. The crystals inside are amonium nitrate. Coating them with vasoline is a very good idea to keep moisture out. I don't see what the lighter fluid is for though (thinning the vasoline).

The only problems I see is that there is a minimum amount of amonium nitrate one must have before he can detonate it (1/4 lb) and a single cold pack. Further more a cherry bomb will not set off amonium nitrate as it dose not have a fast enough detonation speed.

This is a High Explosive, you are not trying to get the componets to burn quickly in a confined space, you are trying to trying to create enough shock with your detonator to initate a rapid decay of the explosive material.

so basically, ammonia nitrate is very explosive, but he wont be able to detonate it? i think the vasaline is to keep the moisture out, and the lighter fluide, well, its just there to hang out! lol

we obviously cant get blasting caps. are there any other ways, other then straping it to a pipe bomb, that could detonate it well?

how about a C02 bomb as a blasting cap? i wouldnt use a wick, cuz well, i wouldnt want to have to run from soemthing thats gonna blow big and make shrapnel to boot!

i would widen the opening to fit one of those broken xmas lights, and fill it with match shavings. i also wouldnt use a button to detonate. i would probably get one of those small alatm clocks that use a 9V battery, and disconnect the speaker. set the alarm (before hand seeing as how some clcks beep when u puch buttons, emaning, KABOOM!) for say 5 pm, when the time says 4:45, ane hook the speaker wires upto the light wires, and walk away calmly to a safe place towatch from.

wait 15 mins, and kaboom. im paranoid tho so doing this would make me shakey as hell! ide have like a tester light and everythign before i hooked it up. infact, ide probably find some way to hook up 2 aligator clips to the wires so i could test it on a light easily, and also, hook it up fast and get outts there!

infact, ide have the best testing location. if this bomb wouldnt split rocks, i would go downto the park near my house, and set it near the giant rock wall, on a small outcrop. and then have some LONG wire, that reaces to the top of the wall where i could connect. then i could (i? i should be saying we) climb down, and cross the river, and sita nice distance away, amogst a bunch of trees! damn im paranoid! can u say 30 min timer set! lol

That dosn't make sense dose it? I ment,"...one must have before he can detonate it (1/4 lb) and I doubt that much is contained in a single cold pack"

Sorry.

Yes you could use a CO2 canester as the detonator. You could use your mom's under wire braw if you were impeled to do so. The container you use is irrevalent. The amount and the detonation speed of the material you place in that container is what matters.

i figuered thats what u meant.

is it about the flame, or the punch? cuz if it is about the punch im sure the container would matter, u couldnt use a film canaster or something. also, do u have any idea how big of a blast it would be? excluding the CO2 blast of course. if i have say just over a 1/4 pound, what kidna radius are we talking? and destruction? (i dont care much for destruction. frankly id be more impressed with a big blast thats not to destructive then a huge one thats gonna take out a block! lol)

Yes it is the punch that matters, or rather the cocusion. No the case dose not.

First the differences between propelents and high explosives must be made clear.

A propelent is a substance that burns quickly, i.e. flash powder, most types of smokeless powder (the exception being bullseye from Aliant), sugar chlorate, ect..
One could place any of these on a table top, throw a match on them, and they would just produce a flame, hot gas, and smoke (no noise). To create a bang or use such propelents to destroy things with concusion or projectiles one must place them in some kind of container like a pipe with caps on both ends, a tightly rooled piece of paper, or the barrel of a fire arm with a bullet preventing the unhendered escape of gas. When this propelent burns it creates hot expanding gas that bursting the container or forces the projectile down the barrel. It is this rupturing of the container that causes the bang, and the small pieces of flying container that will do damage.

By contrast high explosives do not rely on a container bursting to make a bang. Further more many high explosives will not readily burn, and those that do and explosion does not always occure. I have heard stories from Nam Vets who used to use shavings of C4 to start fires, they said it burned like wood. Some will explode when exposed to fire like lead azidide and dynamite (not the modern stuff), however most like C4 and ANFO will not. You see, when they explode they are not technicaly burning, they are decaying rapidily.

To initiate an explosion one needs a detonator that will produce enough concusion to facilitate this rapid decay. Substances like Fulmulating Mercury are typicaly strong enough to do this but in some cases one needs to use a booster to achieve the desired outcome.
