My first underwater test (image inside)
I have always wanted to do an underwater blast, but never got around to it. So, I got to work. I first got one of my triangle firecrackers to do the trick (my triangle firecracker is bigger: see picture) -------- So, I replaced the cannon fuze with a solar igntor, and then put it in a plastic bag, and sealing it with duct tape and hot glue. I then filled a bucket full of water and put the charge in. But the plastic bag made it float, so I used a weight. It took 2 rubber hammers to weigh it down -------- When I put the bucket in the backyard, I touchet a 9v battery to the wire to set it off from a distance. To my suprise it bursted the bucket! Now, why do all of my experements end up more powerful then I expected!?!?!? [This message has been edited by Rat_Bastard (edited 02-03-2002).]

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
A solar igniter is the same as a model rocket igniter. You can buy them from hobby shops or make your own with a strand of steel wool.
What on earth did you have that polumna filled with, actetone peroxide?

Zero<<<plain old Whistle Powder!!! (from screecharoos, piccilo petes, ect)
I was very suprised that it bursted that bucket (It was a strong bucket too! )
Death Row<<<Sorry that I didnt get any pics of it blowing up, I don't have the videocamera now (I borrowed it).

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
Impressive. It looks like you used quite a bit of tape, as well.
I usually use fine black powder in my polumnas, and they don't pack any more destructive power than small firecrackers. I'll have to do some design experiments with these things to see if I can reproduce your result.

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
Explosive charges tend to have more power under the water. The Shock wave tends to be more powerful. I once read these guys on a boat in some war, threw out concussion grenades at these guys trying to get at their boat when actually their grenades ruptured their boats bladder even though they were a distance away.

Ahhhhhhhh.... now it makes sense. The plasic bag that held the polumna was full of air (that explains why it took so much to weigh it down) and the air in the bag probably made a big shokwave, which bursted the bucket. I used about 2 layers of fabric tape on my polumna.

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
Underwater detonations seem to pack more punch because the water gives the explosive more confinement. I am still surprised that a polumna could take out a platic bucket like that, but I certainly don't rule it out as impossible.

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
Underwater explosions supposedly have three times the range for concussion, thus a 10 foot range would be 30 foot underwater. The reason being that water is a better conducter that air for shockwaves. Just my $0.02 (I'm checking old posts and reading up, hehehe)

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
yeah there ya go. the real reason is because the water transmits shockwaves better than air, so the energy of the explosion was transfered to the bucket with ease and efficiency.
i dont think that more confidement makes a more powerful explosion unless its a high explosive and detonates rather than deflagrates.

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
My friend ktownnoggle had a stoke of genious, he said it would be cool to seal a mail box with cualk (dont know how to fuckin spell it) drill like a one inch hole in the top of it, fill it with water and drop a CO2 bomb in it. He thought of this cause theres this stubborn little bastard mailbox that only gets magled when we try to blow it up. So who knows

Most people keep their mail boxes in the "frontyard".

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
how did you make the polumna? i didnt know that a model rocket ignitor would set off a regular cannon fuse. how did you rig the whole thing up?
edit nevermind, i just noticed that link you posted. good work man!

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
i would like to try that with a cratermaker inside a pool or shallow pond. try to make a boyancy compensator that would keep it like 1ft below the water's surface. it might be cool, and in that case you would definently have to seal it up good so the thing will actually go off underwater.

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
we tried it twice underwater with crater makers just bout an hour ago cos i saw this post and got curious the first one we did allmost the same as rat with his triangle thing got a balloon tied the plastic bag with the crator maker in it with a 2 foot long string and tried a few rocks to a 1 foot long piece of string under the cretor maker chucked it in the pond/senic reserve and for fun put some bread round it for the ducks we detonated it and there was a huge like jet of water that came stright up and dispersed into a wave not sure if any ducks got killed the other one we tried was my mates idea we got a alkathene pipe caped the end pushed it into the water right ot the bottem and got the cretor maker lit it droped it down the pipe and took off dint see it explode but it made a bigger bang oh yeah and we stuck a few marbles on top of the crator maker in the pipe wonder where they went

Re: My first underwater test (image inside)
shadow_stalker PLEASE use more punctuation, because it looks like one giant sentence and rather kewlish. quote: Originally posted by nimlars: That had to be fun to watch go off.
Not really, It wasn't that impressive. The bucket just bursted open making a PLOSHHH! sound, and all of the water poured out. A cratermaker (CO2 cartridge bomb) underwater is way more impressive.
