Earth, at one point, was bombarded with asteroids.

ARGUMENT FROM UNIVERSAL OBLIVION

1. I woke up this morning and found that the universe still exists.
2. Therefore its destruction was averted by God.
3. Therefore, God exists.

Well, let's see... we have a rather nice atmosphere that filters out the smaller rocks before they hit. We also have erosion, plate tectonics and other geologic activities that destroy evidence of meteorite hits in short order.

But there are some nifty and pretty huge blast craters, such as the one from the impact that is associated with the dinosaur's extinction (and even larger ones). They have to be pretty darn big to survive millions of years, though.

We are bombared by asteroids, pretty regularly. As the earth spins through its solar orbit, and the sun through its galatic orbit, we also move up and down a bit too. The fringes of the vertical track have little massive debris, and we spend most of our time in the fringes, but the center of the vertical track is most hazardous, and every 125,000 years or so we enter it, and seem to get hit by a big rock every time.

And we're long overdue. The NTS-2019 is looking to make a return around 2060, so unless we get out there in space and start making little space hubs and colonies then I doubt we'll last too much longer.

Every day i hear about some new asteroid thats gonna hit earth, and with each new asteroid it seems to get closer and closer to the present...

r0k-
Even if earth wasn't bombarded with asteroids, why would it be "god's" doing? It couldnt be luck? Or our perticular orbit? Or the fact that we have a dense atmosphere? Why does the one answer HAVE to be god?

Dark, I don't know how old you are, but 2060 is not looking a very 'lively' year for me whichever way the planet retires! How will building space hubs, colonies etc., help? We are all "dead men walking" so to speak, just how does it make a difference if we go out in a blazing comet or decrepit old age?

Dark was suggesting that we colonize some off-world planets or something, thereby saving the species, when the surface of the Earth dies temporarily.

I couldn't afford to go, so I'll be dead.

...unless I'm chosen for my procreative prowess.

I think it's about time the human race becomes exitinct anyway.
I mean, c'mon. I've never seen such a bunch of fuckups.

Yep. There are uncountable numbers of huge flying debris flying around in space and we can only keep track of a small percentage of them. All it takes is some big chunk of rock about a mile big to knock the world back to the stone-age. There are plenty out there big enough to destroy all life on earth and the planet itself. It's like being in the middile of a gunfight with people using different caliber ammunition. You get a bunch of bullets whizzing by and nicking you, but all it takes is one of a big enough caliber to slam into you and that's it.

Well I'll either be dead or an old man by 2060 so I am not too worried about it, but you know, there is always a generation that has to deal with the shit that all the previous generations stockpiled.

That's easy to see
if you watch TV
why don't you look around
and find your own ground? (stolen)
don't lament the sheep
be glad that they're asleep
listen for their bleat
for you too, have to eat.

I ripped off the second verse from Pink Floyd, otherwise it's just made up on the spot. You couldn't tell from the high quality?

Sorry im trying to get my huge asteroid magnet to work. We are being constantly being bombed by asteroids and nutrinos, just because they havent killed us yet doesnt have anything to do with god. We just have a good atmosphere. Reasonably good for the time being at least...
