Sex
Why is it that many religions sround the world presribe to celibacy, I know that many don't but I'm interested more in the one that do, what perpose does this serve, is it based in suppersition or does it acctualy increase spiritual awearness? And it's not only larger organised religions that do it, but seemingly some tribal based shamanism and other things that I wasn't realy expecting, And also what is the greater drive in man the drive for plessure, focusing on sexual plessure (Freud) or the drive for truth? Plessure seems a more inherent need, more powerful in the begining, but many get easily bored and forsake this because something greater is promised, truth, eternal life, all those things sunominious with religious enlightenment,

Re: Sex
Celibacy perscribed by religion is obsolete. Back during those times, people married before they were even in their teens.
Todays society makes ancient religious practices illegal. Like stoning adulterers to death and killing those that eat meat on friday.

Re: Sex
I mean in the preisthood etc. In one particular tribe I was reading about they don't actualy have life long vows but the only word they have that refres to sexual abstinance for long periods is a prefix that is aplied to the word lietraly meaning "holy-power-of-the-second-birth" I think that this is pretty interesting, manythings that has something like esoteric practices geared at high levels of spiritual experience seems to has sexual abstinance as a part, WaWaWhat the fuck?

I don't know that the "drive for truth" is instinctual, but it's sure easy to see, that knowing the truth; has nothing to do with getting a nut. Instinctual procreation comes from a different set of natural laws, than do the higher thought processes used to seek truth. Any half-wit can enjoy recreational fucking... and never know a single fact. Therefore, the pleasures of rec-fuck cannot be associated with the higher thought process. But sometimes it really feels like it is...

Re: Sex
Many religions that I know of only preach celibacy if you are not a full member of the church. This allows the church to use natural human drives as a recruiting method. If you want to screw, you join the church. If you join the church, the church owns you.

Re: Sex
Sex releases a lot of energy (not just calorie burning). Priesthoods are meant to tap into your own energy. If its gone youre not a very good priest.

Re: Sex
That's way beyond a job... makes you think about the devotion required... and the insignificance of calling bingo.

Sounds like the ages old debate, like the ancient greeks seperated into different philosophies, mainly the Stoics and the Epicureans. The stoics believed in duty as the truth, they believed that if we as reasoning individuals choose to perform our duties to ourselves and our fellows everything works toghether for good and that is truth. The epicureans believed the pursuit of personal pleasure was the highest truth, but that was practically unattainable unless all others shared pleasurable lives. Therefore both groups co-operated, but from very different motives, both had their version of the truth, and living out their truths entailed similar civic responsibilities. Perhaps an answer to your question is that the drive for pleasure and the drive for truth are similar in nature and result, but spring from different motivations and bring about different lifestyles. Lifestyles that can be complimentary and that may lead to similar discoveries.
