Because having a face to the name of a God (which was understood usually as just a name of a force) helps one to visualize and ponder it. Unconciously, even glancing at the image youve come to know as the face of the god of strength inspires you to be stronger (or makes you feel like shit if youre walking around ashamed of cowardice or something)
Only humans can think in symbols and constantly assign images to abstract forces, like love or victory, so, they built and prayed to statues because those statues were the embodiment of what they felt about certain things.
Id take ancient man over anyone today with 3 to 1 odds bro. We cant build Egypt.
