Re: meditation
Proper meditation should take place either in complete silence or with very, very low volume, relaxing music playing. It takes some time, but if you focus on one thing and one thing only, eventually, in your mind, you will be that thing, and that thing will be you. You will be completely focused on that singular thing.
Most people have experienced this in an uncontrolled way- ever have an experience where you did something without conscious thought, where you suddenly "became one" with whatever it was you were doing? Meditation is purposefully focusing your mind in the same way.
Although it's good for achieving a state of calm and relaxation, and freeing your mind from the pressures of life, it's even better at defeating mental blocks. A story:
There was once a wrestler named Dabo (translated: "Great Wave"). He was a huge man, and very skilled. In practice, he could defeat anyone, even his master. When it came to real competition, however, even the smallest wrestlers could beat him. Frustrated, he went to a Zen master for help.
After relating his problem to the master, the old man replied, "Ah.. your name is Great Wave, right? Then imagine yourself as a wave, crashing and rolling through all your opponents. Do this, and you will become the greatest wrestler in the land- invincible."
Dabo went and sat in private mediation. It took some time for him to focus, but eventually, he could see a rolling wave. It washed upon the temple, crashing through the halls, carrying away everything in sight; only he remained motionless, one with the wave. Not only could he withstand the wave's power, he was part of the wave's power.
After a time, he was roused by the master.
"Wake up, wake up! You've done it!"
Dabo said simply, "Thank you."
From there, he went on to become the greatest wrestler in the land- invincible.

Re: meditation
Taking something to help with meditation is like taking a shortcut while running- you get from point A to point B, but you don't get all the benefits of the journey that doing it without cheating would grant you.
Doesn't mean it's a BAD idea to take anything- just that there is benefit to not doing it. Do as you will.

Re: meditation
Proper meditation can occur in any environment. It does not depend on what's outside you, but on the clarity and focus of your own mind. If you focus your thoughts and mental energy, you can achieve good meditation anywhere at anytime.

Re: meditation
There was a time in my life where I got so into meditation that I could slip in and out of different realities. I was literally in up to four, five, or more places at once at sometimes. I was able to astroproject and both of those things got me very little. But, my meditation was through prayer to my God and I found that meditation gave me a stronger connection with God, it also increased my physical and psychological endurance, but as far as going into alternate plains of existance, that was purely for psychological means. It helped me get my head straight and answer internal question. I learned how to astroproject, though, just because it's fun to be "awake" in your dreams and be able to control them. Because when you're dreaming there are no rules, you can fly and if you have a test or something the next day, you can learn all the answers.
I haven't been keeping on it much lately. I've been very sidetracked. But, I can help you with some "tricks" of trade if you're interested. Just drop me some mail.
Cheers, Lost
