| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

I've got no problem with people who sue other people... it's the JUDGES that actually award damages that chap my ass.

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
Cases like the ones in that artice are sad and disgraceful. The funny thing is, even if they get all that money, what are they going to do with it? I mean they're physically fucked up for life - there's no way they can truly enjoy their lives that way even if they do get $9 million. Serves them right...

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
This litigation bullshit needs to stop. Like the ACLU was pulling crosses of war veterans put their by their families. WTF? Did you hear about the guy that sued McDoanlds because he ate Big Macs, Fries, and Chicken Buckets everyday and wondered why he was so fucking fat? Or the guy that sued because his coffe was too hot? Maybe if I stab myself with a pencil I can get legislation passed called 'The Towelhead Bill" which prohibits yellow or otherwise 'threatening looking' pencils. On TV I can run around in a creeky wheelchair and show the damage that a #2 pencil has caused to my life. I could even sue saying it was a 'traumatic experience' and that trees probably aren't happy either.

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
Here's another atrocity--some idiot walks along w/headphones on, steps into traffic w/o looking, gets hit by a car, sues Sony, wins. To my recollection, this sort of bs was up an running around 1974 when they took the diving boards off of pools in the apt complex I was living in.

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
Some fairly late-breaking good news--the fast food fatty case was thrown out of court, thank goodness for a judge w/two brain cells to rub together. By the way, the coffee thing wasn't totally bogus--after all, the old woman did suffer serious second-degree burns and required hospital treatment--granted, it wasn't terribly bright to try holding the container between her legs.

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
Why don't we just adopt the British system---if you lose, you have to pay the other parties legal bills. This would stop like 60% of lawsuits, since some are filed soley for the purposes of harassment/

Re: Stupid Over-litigious society
The one major fear about the British system is that it would make it harder to sue large corporations. The corporations would be able to stone wall the case forever and in theory pull some fancy jew legals moves at the end and win the case. Causing the defendent to pay horrific ammounts of legal bills. Depsite that, I am in favor of the idea.
