| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Compulsory Voting
If the United States implemented laws requiring every citizen to vote how do you envision the country?
I personally believe the country would turn into a giant heap of liberal trash, probably further left that Micheal Moore running the country.
Your thoughts?

Re: Compulsory Voting
If everyone in our country was allowed to vote it would enhance the power that those who control the media have over us. Like it or not, 80% of Americans are fucking tools. They listen to whatever they are told and never venture to think for themselves. Since the media is mostly biased towards liberals the vote of the uneducated masses would go to the Democrats. This would result in "A giant heap of liberal trash" for a country.

Re: Compulsory Voting
Y'know, I'd just prefer that the ignorant and apathetic stay home on election day. That way those of us who can read don't have to contend with long lines and stuff.

Amen. I usally do not vote. This election year, I am going to vote Bush out. The problem is I dont want to vote some one of the republic or the democratic party into office because they might be worse then Bush. I really want to vote for a third party canidate but that is like throwing my vote away.

Re: Compulsory Voting
America ranks dismally low among voter turnouts compared to the rest of the world..i believe the average turnout is between 40-60%.
Some countries like italys average are 90.5%!
And others like Iraq, are 100%, and Saddam always wins.

Yep. Not allowed though, forced to. Which was the point of the topic, yes? I'll assume a typo. quote: Like it or not, 80% of Americans are fucking tools. They listen to whatever they are told and never venture to think for themselves.
Yep. Same goes for most countries, probably. quote: Since the media is mostly biased towards liberals the vote of the uneducated masses would go to the Democrats. This would result in "A giant heap of liberal trash" for a country.
Hmmm. Not living in the US I couldn't really say how liberal the media is, but judging from Time and Newsweek (which I read at the local library) and what little American news coverage I see on TV, it isn't liberal in the least. Whatever. Compulsory voting is a terrible idea. If you want people to vote, get more than two parties in there, or make the two parties different from each other.

Re: Compulsory Voting
A friend told me Belgium has compulsory voting. I never bothered to verify it though. Personally, I think it's a dumb idea for the most obvious of reasons.

Re: Compulsory Voting
I am aethiest, formally Episcopalian
Iraq: 100% turnout required under pain of death, and torture.
Vote for Saddam! Everybody loves Saddam, no? That's why he wins 100% of the vote, everytime. In a country of 30 million people, we are so efficient, all the votes are counted, tallied, and verrified 1 hour after the polls close.
Saddam Hussein is so smart and talented, he has won the vote 9 times for three year terms.

Re: Compulsory Voting
People died for you to have the choice to vote..
CHOICE
what is a right when it is manditory.
People use that choice all the time, they choose to vote/not to vote.
End of story folks.

The number is way fucking higher than that. I would say that 80% of the americans who DO vote are tools, but 95-99% of the entire american populace is made up of fucking dolts. Homer

Good Idea, too bad that those who didn't vote would be bitching over every single little thing they don't agree with. Like you said, I much prefer those too ignorant and dumb to think for themselves to stay at home.
