| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

censorship of anti-free speach movements
OK i dont know how this ever fell to a discussion about child porn but anyways i thought id say something
Largely ive always felt that a persons right to say or do whatever they want ought to extend up to the point that they take away someone elses right to say and do whatever they want. Obviously this concept creates problems, like the censorship of censorship idea.
On the ohter hand i am a jew and the concept of nazis having a parade threw a jewish neirborhood bothers me, so suddenly you have another issue: does a comunity have the right to selectivly decide for itself what is and is not aproipreate behavior and or beliefs for membership. In theory yes, but does a white neirborhood have the right to keep out blacks, no. And so i can make a logical debate against everything that i would say on the topic.
the book "fareinheit 451" has been banned in many schools and public librarys.

So I do not need to remind you of the KKK march through Skokie and the subsequent court case (ACLU supporting the KKK and loosing many members as a result). The particular issue that you bring up is the absolute core of the concept of 'Free Speech'. Some of the morons that post here at Totse scream free speech and the have no idea about the magnitude of the concept. Your dilemma my friend, is one that you need to give serious thought to and I'm afraid that when all is said and done, your final solution will determine where you really stand on the issue of free speech. For what it's worth. Nox

Re: censorship of anti-free speach movements
We all will as human being jump to defend that which we beileve in, gurenteed freedom of speach vs. Censorship is the question of weather or not we get a higher podium (sp?) and a louder Public adress system or we litagate. that is almost what it comes down to.
i do not know what the hate speach laws are so i cant say weather or not i support them.
If you are refering to the laws that say you can supress ideas that will incite violence then id say its a case by case type of thing. Yelling fire in a crowded movie theater when the emergency did not exist, the chiche' example of abused freedom of speach, of course would be wrong. real situations are not so simple, if you stand in front of many and tout killing all of the little bunnies in the area, should we supress you for the sake of the bunnies? or should we trust people to their own judgment. can you say kristle nacht
One thing that could be seen as important would be the responsibility all human being have twords each other. Its not for me to determine how far that goes, but we all have a coinceinse.
i also think its important to specifically defend satire, which is ver yoften the object of many censorship drives. This form of expression is largely hated but vital to the evolution of culture, and then youd have to determine where the line behind violent writing, and violent ideas and humor is, thats a hard one.
i know this is starting to seam like a scatter brain post, sorry about that, im very tired.

Yes, you are muddled. Let me help.
Do you think "racism" should be censored and "racists" arrested or fined?
