| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Henry Kissinger
He has quite a checkered past. He won the Nobel Peace Prize, but he also is responsible for the bombings in Cambodia, and some questionable events on both sides of the globe.
So why did Bush bring him back?

Re: Henry Kissinger
There are those who think Henry is wise.
My opinion of Henry is that he's spent too much time reading his own autobiography ... and believing it. What a pity!

Re: Henry Kissinger
Perhaps, because Kissinger was national security advisor, secretary of state, and is experienced in international affairs. As for the bombings in Cambodia, to little to late.

I don't know about the wise part, but as far as effective and efficacious(which are synonyms), what is the desired effect of appointing someone who has a questionable past? Who is currently being sued by peoples from 2 different countries, on two different continents, and is wanted for questioning by the governments of Spain and France. You would think that any administration would try to avoid that much heat. [This message has been edited by Templeton (edited 12-07-2002).]

So why did Bush bring him back?
he won the nobel for brokering peace in vietnam which clearly wad not going anywhere, and continuing an overt war was probably more damaging, so many deaths later he was part of the much needed peace. while gratefull for the ending of that war, i don't think he was the true reason it ended. so yea, nobel peace my bottom the guy is ..just wrong.. and i can not!can not!! belive he is part of our current gov't and my freaking taxes are contributing to his paycheck. in conclusion i think he is back b/c the current government is evil [This message has been edited by farwah (edited 12-07-2002).]

Re: Henry Kissinger
The whole reason that the peace negotiations in Vietnam were going nowhere is because the American delegation was stonewalling on some very basic issues - withdrawal of U.S. troops, elections in the south, etc. Kissinger just jumped in and offered a semi-palatable treaty, which the exhausted Northerners accepted. Not exactly rocket science.

The desired effect...hmm...Bush can't be criticized for not appointing a committee, and he doesn't have to worry about his opponets criticizing him in the results.

Now, now, then. Most of us feel the same way about you, but we don't keep bringing it up.

I don't think you people can understand that every action Kissinger took must be considered in the contest of the Cold War.

Re: Henry Kissinger
Possibly true. However, Henry had some severe cases of cranial rectalitis. One example (and I have multiple others), when negotiating the SALT treaty, this PhD counted the 2 XB-70 bombers on display as "current, and active US bombers in the bomber count. That moron spent too much time in the classroom and zero in the military ... However, that didn't stop him from being an "Expert".

Re: Henry Kissinger
It's not his job to look after the military. That's best left to the Joint-Chiefs-of-Staff.
Anyway, the military has nothing to do with 9-11.

Re: Henry Kissinger
True. But when one is a negotiator, one is expected to know something about the topic. Yet again HK is put in an important position, but does he know anything about it?

Re: Henry Kissinger
Henry Kissinger, How I'm missing yer, You're the doctor of my dreams, With your crinkly hair, And your glassy stare, And your Machiavellian schemes. I know they say that you are very vain... And short and fat and pushy, But at least you're not insane...
Henry Kissinger, How I'm missing yer, And wishing you were here.
Henry Kissinger, How I'm missing yer, You're so chubby and so neat, With your funny clothes And your squishy nose, You're like a German parakeet. All right so people say that you don't care, But you've got nicer legs than Hitler, And bigger tits than Cher...
Henry Kissinger How I'm missing yer And wishing you were here...

I hope I'm not being presumptuous in assuming that you are asking me and if this is just a general question, then I'll still put in my 2 cents. I had not really thought about it prior to your asking the question but since thinking about it, this would have been a perfect opportunity to give a different kind of political exposure to JC Watts. Since the Republicans are trying to show that they really are showing diversity (Condi and Colin) in the upper echelons of government, this would have been an opportunity. One other side comment. In the opening post, Templeton made reference to the bombings in Cambodia (which sparked the Kent State fiasco), do not forget that it has only been in the last few years that the Vietnamese admitted that they were using Cambodia as a staging area. At the time, the US told the truth, the Vietnamese lied. The moral, be careful when patently believing the other side when it starts "speaking the truth" (hint ... Saddam/UBL). Nox

I like Hitchens, although he's recently surprised me with his surprising shift to the right on the issue of Iraq.
