Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. Default Fidel Castro -------Why all the lies?

I can't believe the amount of bullshit I hear from the States about this man! As far as I can see, he has done nothing wrong, but the CIA are constantly trying to kill him.

The people are as free as the Americans in Cuba----but they aren't as insanely unequal. It's what I like to call Liberal-Communism. All the bad things associated with Communism are absent in Cuba;
Democracy...It's no worse than USA...2 candidates with the same policies. So what?
Human Rights...100% literacy, more doctors per head than anywhere else in the 3rd world, no concentration camps (USA the benchmark human rights nation has at least 2), in fact they're cool on that front.
"Some are more equal than others"-Not in Cuba- The Governnment have no advantages over the population. Even in Russia, someone had to have the big pads, so why not give it to the government (it's totally against Communism and I'd have had them turned into flats, but then that's me).

But all the good things about Communism are there; no privately owned businesses, no foreigners giving golden handshakes to the government like before. Nobody being given the right to tell everyone what to do on no authority but the size of their wallets.

So why are USA so against him? I believe the public go along with it because of what the US government tell them (via the media) about him, which is quite terrible...and also blatant lies! And I believe that the US government are cowards. They are not interested in the interests of the people and therefore the priciples of Marxism threaten them. The whole system of choosing a president is flawed. With the difference between the popularity of both parties being so very very small (is a landslide even possible?). The winner is decided by who has the most money to spend on the campaign... which is wrong in itself... especially when the money ALWAYS comes from the corporate rapists who proceed to control the policies of the government (In England we have a Law which states that candidates cannot spend more than a certain amount on the campaign, which is better). So therefore Communism is dangerous personally to the people who make the decisions. Luckily you are all quite versatile (gullible) and will go along with it for them. So in fact you hate Castro because you are told to... and you feel the need to justify that hatred properly, and sice there is no legitimate justification, lies are neccessary.

That is why all the lies.

The UK consituency system is better than the electoral college, but far from flawless. It is still possible for a party to win a majority of seats in the Commons in spite of not winning the most votes, and more significantly the way constinuencies are divided up gives the Labour party a significant advantage. The individual UK candidates may not spend more than the amounts they are supposed to (with notable exceptions), but the parties as a whole spend vast sums on advertising, and of course the government uses public tax revenue to promote its services with the intention of winning it electoral support.

I wouldn't say people in Cuba are free. They aren't slaves to the government the way our textbooks make them out to be, but Cuba is far from a free country.

Whether Fidel Castro is at fault for this is arguable. I personally place more of the blame on our foreign policy towards Cuba then Castro himself, since as our embargo tigthened, Cuba's "freedoms" got proggresively worse to compensate. Cuba's still pretty far away from being a free country, which I can admit despite my fondness of Fidel Castro as a progressive leader.

My main argument as that several of the US's allys have a much worse human rights record then Fidel Castro in every possible field, which shows that our diversion to Cuabn Communism isn't as neccesarily based on human rights as it is on our national interest.

Communism works in cuba.
Communism worked in Russia (at least better than capitalism).
A mcarthy-like spirit still prevades over america, because since we were kids we were told communism was bad.
When I was a kid, I literally DESPISED cuba. I literally DESISED communism, then my grandfather asked me what communism was, and I really had no idea.
The fact is that our fat, secretary-fucking government feels threatened by communism, and they want to do to it exactly what they do to their mistresses when they are threatened by them:
a)drown it in an oldsmobile
b)have it killed and dumped in a park in DC.

And nox, shame on you, you are acting like an idiot. You offer NO evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, and you say that chuckstone is wrong... You are stupid.

Communism works? Only is small voluntary communes my friend where esteam mechanisms have much greater force.

Capitalism is struggling in Russia, but the idea that things are going to be worse than when they were under the iron fist of Stalin is nonsense. There is simply not enough capitalism in Russia and it is that which is adding to their problems.

I know what Communism is, evil. Communism is the exact opposite of Capitalism and a threat. Communism is weak unless it is backed by the state and the state can only maintain power by denying the efficiency of any other competing system. Capitalism, with the wealth it brings, seduces people away from Communism and away from the Communist government, to keep power one has to rule with an iron fist. Communism cannot survive on a large scale without directed and deliberate violence against the people.

They can freely leave, and often do. Castro has no time for people who have no time for him. Are you confusing "secret police" with Customs? Who are simply monitoring who leaves and who doesn't. USA has one too you idiot.

"Your opinion is noted, considered, and rejected as false...it is however, your opinion." on what authority? Your warped sense of reality? Your "truth"? HA! You're the epitomy of the naive American stereotype.

Cuba has an inherent lack of resources and therefore will never be able to compete on the world market. USA is lucky enough to have everything and has no concept of this. Also, Cuba seems to be prohibited from trafing with anyone other than USA...who is enforcing an embargo against them. What chance do they have?

Let me give a quick lesson to you all about Capitalsim. Capitalism can not and will not work in an atmosphere of extreme government intervention. What this means is that when the government of a country completely whores itself out and grants monopolisitic privaleges and raises the barriers to entry in certain markets, things go to shit. Everyone knows the Cuba was/is and Mexico still has a very corrupt government. The constant need to bribe officials and the govenmenets power to shut down your business on bureucratic whim really do not help things there. My point is that a country can still claim to be Capitalsitic, but still have a represive government that really fucks up their oppoetunities for growth. Fiscal policy is also important to consider, but should be saced for another post.

It would work less in an agricultural nation, because there would be no incentive for the farmers to produce anything above a subsitance level. Why work harder when you allready produce all the food that you need? You are also for some reason implicitely claiming that Communism ends world hunger while Capitalism promotes it, LOL.

Our government's treatment of Cuba is shameful. The first thing that comes to my mind is that Cuba is on the list of nations that support terrorism. Fidel Castro may have done some horrible things to his people, but look at China, they have done worse on a much larger scale. I don't see them on the U.S. government's list of nations that sponsor terrorism. The Saudi Arabian government teaches their children to despise America and Israel. Not suprisingly, 15 of the 19 hijackers that flew a plane into the WTC were Saudis. I didn't see any Cubans flying airplanes into the twin towers.

We do business with other communist nations, but our government still has a problem with Cuba. Chinese human rights violations are comparable to those of Iraq, but we have a trade deficit with them. Castro takes power during the McCarthy years and the U.S. is still afraid of him.

I think the truth behind this is that American politicians are too cowardly to make an issue out of this because it may threaten their chances of getting re-elected. Therefore, they are just hoping he will die and democracy will magically take over in Cuba. I am sure Castro has a plan for another leader to take his place after he dies. Are we going to ease our hostility toward Cuba then? I can't think of a reason why we shouldn't have normal relations with Cuba NOW except that McCarthy told us that it was bad 50 years ago.

I see a lot of people criticise Communism based on, and only on Stalin's methods. The Government DOES play an important role in the success of the system. In Russia, Stalin had all the best farmers shot, so it reasons that the agriculture would fail. Cuba on the other hand is doing remarkably well considering the economically bad situation the country has. And I will go as far to say that it was probably Communism that did this.

"Fidel Castro may have done some horrible things to his people" - jsaxton14 - That's an accusation I have heard many many times before, and in my experience it is completely false. Castro is bloody good to his people and they have benefited from his leadership 10 fold - The only people who didn't benefit were the American businessmen who were fucking the economy up anyway, and frankly, I don't give a shit about them, as they are scum! Even China is maligned and demonised by the Americans. The human rights record is appaling, but not nearly as appaling as made out by western media. I understand that the TV was switched off during the World Cup and a riot ensued... Chinese riots are VERY rare, so that event must have been VERY bad in comparison to everything else (or riots would be much more regular).

Cuba didn't sell anyone out. USA chose not to trade with Cuba. USA therefore forced Cuba to trade with Russia. It was therefore in Russia's best interests to keep Cuba safe. Given that the US had been threatening invasions and bombing raids for years, for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON! (Because USA is a bully boy who felt put out because the Cuban people were happier with Castro than with the kerb crawling Americans, and still are believe me)

"Well, gee, Im sorry they chose the wrong side." - Sol463
???? What, is this another ridiculous claim that US won the cold war? A war that never happened, and therefore can not have been considered a victory for anyone? Except the Americans obviously who claim to have won Vietnam and Korea too.

"fuck'em. Reep what you sow." - Sol463

Show me where that is a lie...Remember Elian Gonzales? Remember Elians mother? Remember how free Elians father was to come to this country unescorted?

By the way. If the articles you write for "Si" magazine are as full of drivel, tripe, and crap as what you post on Totse, then the readership of said magazine remains uninformed. The fact that you may or may not have written an article doesn't mean you know what you are talking about. I reference the multiple historical fact errors you have made here at Totse not all of which were corrected by me (others helped also). That sort of lack of track record for accuracy on your research makes me highly dubious of the literary quality of your work. As the saying goes, GIGO.

I agree with you that Cuba doesn't allow its citizens to exit freely but it's not only Cuba, there are dozens and dozens of other countries that have the same policy. It's usually the poor countires and they have good reason for it; if everyone exits then there would be no more country. That's why the USA have to stop the restrictive policy on Cuba.

Historical fact, December 19, 1960, Cuba OPENLY aligns itself with the Soviet Union. We break off trade January 3, 1961.

Do I need to post a review on the basics of number flow and how which one precedes
which?

Here, ready, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now just apply that to dates; 1960, 1961, 1962. See you only need to understand how to count to two, and understand the basic concept of zero, you know, that it comes before 1.

>>???? What, is this another ridiculous claim that US won the cold war?<<

You apparently are unaware of the historical facts, and you say you write for a magazine, or are simply unable to grasp the concept of counting how could I expect you to understand something as complicated as the concept of a Cold War, let alone who won it.

>> which is why you hate them so much!<<

Hate? A word used to provoke some sort clout to your moronic ramblings? I dont need to hate them to tell Fidel and his people to go fuck themselves. The US and Cuba are not the only nations on the planet that can trade together, Cuba simply has nothing to offer. The rest of the world evidently sees that. Cuba, like a fool, alienated itself to the most economically powerful nation on its side of the hemishpere.

USA doesn't even let people in and out unchecked. When I travel to Cuba, I doubt that HMS Customs would let me go if I had expressed a wish to leave for good. The only reason people wish to leave Cuba is because they don't like it there, you can't please all of the people all of the time. Fidel has expressly said on a number of times words to the effect of "If you don't like it, go to America". This "secret police" are an open government agency comparably to customs ensuring people aren't leaving with goods that need to be checked. It's common practice world wide. (I myself believe in the abolishment of customs worldwide and allowing the free travel from country to country at will, but it's unlikely that bill will ever get passed through parliament)

"Historical fact, December 19, 1960, Cuba OPENLY aligns itself with the Soviet Union. We break off trade January 3, 1961." There is no crime in that. I was never under any illusion of the order of events. It stands to reason that one Marxist-Leninist revolutionary would allign itself with another, older revolutionary nation. when Cuba "sold out" the USA, they were "selling out" a country that had been taking advantage of it's people for decades. No love lost there, you imply that Cuba owed sonething to USA, it didn't.

So far, my sources are 100% reliable and include real life experience, which is something Americans will often never get of Cuba because of the Boogieman Fidel. Nox, Your sources are mostly absent and on the rare occcasion you have a source, it is unrelaible. You are a failed politician, who has been relegated to vote counting and this Forum, FAILED is the operative word here. The American way (no offence, it is a generalisation) is that you decise who the enemy is before you decide why... sometimes it works (although I can't produce any examples) but Fidel Casstro is a prime example of you hating a figure because you have been told to, and not having a legitimate reason to. US government have a vested interest in keeping you hating him (if you realise the truth about Communism it might catch, The term "Domino Effect" was used a lot to describe Communism, but have you ever questioned WHY Communism spread in such a manner, it's not because of propaganda because the Communist weren't in power at that time.), but you have no reason in your hearts.

Again Chucky it is my pleasure to come to this forum and learn things about myself...especially from the resident Mr.-Know-It-All. You have set my mind straight now, because prior to reading your 'facts' my feeble brain was under the impression that:

I have never run for public office (this hardly qualifies me as a politician, let alone "failed")

I have served as an Election Clerk (3 times) and an Election Majority Judge (last election). In NONE of the aforementioned elections did I "count" votes. Voting was via machine. However, all three times I was a Clerk, I hand carried the cartridge containing the precinct voting information to the collection point (I was paid an additional $15 for the 20 minutes effort each time). Count votes? Hardly.

Chucky, since you like operative words (as do I) here is an operative word which describes you and most of the tripe you post: IDIOT.

Chucky,

I posted this before and you either missed it or ignored it. But since you have again elected to dislocate your own shoulder patting yourself on the back about your own superific literary accomplishments, I am going to allow you another opportunity to respond to this post of mine:

The fact that you may or may not have written an article doesn't mean you know what you are talking about. I reference the multiple historical fact errors you have made here at Totse not all of which were corrected by me (others helped also). That sort of lack of track record for accuracy on your research makes me highly dubious of the literary quality of your work. As the saying goes, GIGO.

Favor me with one of these "articles" so I may peruse it.

Come on Chucky. As they say in the State of Missouri: "Show me".

hey guys, i'm new to the totse boards, so let me just say hi.

i will admit that most of the propaganda surrounding castro is probably exagerations brought on by the still lingering 'red scare', but that doesn't mean the man is some sort of savior. as much as i commend him for the progress he's made, he has his flaws. he's most certainly not getting any younger, wich shows at every appearance he makes. he's a work-aholic, sleeping less than 30 hours a week usually, not to mention his less than perfect health. after awhile, that takes a toll on someone's decision making abilities.

cuba needs a new leader, and a new system. they tried communism, and made a damn good run, better then most countries who tryed it. but everything revolves around darwin's survival of the fittest, especially politics. communism blatantly goes against that, claiming complete equality in a world where no one is in fact equal. capitalism on the other hand, is based entirely on that theory.

in this world you either learn to swim, or drown. the most UN-progressive thing you can do is force the strong to be equal to the weak.

Castro's devotion to his work is what makes him ideal for the role of Presidente. Perhaps when he evntually retires (probably by death if you know what I mean), perhaps his successor will be crap. Fidel Castro fought long and hard for his privelage, and he is determined to make it work. Communism in Cuba is not failing by any stretch of the imagination (except for an American imagination) and it's doing more for the people of Cuba than any other previously tried system. US instantly states that by being Communist, Cuba must also be a whole lot of other unrelated (but bad) things, like a dictatorship, poor, oppressive. This is JUST NOT TRUE. And USA repeatedly try and jsutify their hatred of Communism by these factors... but Cuba is a problem because whilst Communist, it does not adhere to these stereotypes. The media and government have an inherant fear of Communism for their own reasons, and have transfered that onto you. Cuba's system is a paradox, but this is screened by a wall of lies which Uncle Sam's loyal terriers have swallowed like a pill.

What do you want me to show you Nox? I'd post you a copy, but I can't. Go into a library and ask for it if you wish, You can check out my facts if you like. They aren't state secrets, there just a little harder to access than your sack of shit lies. Which are consistent only in their falseness. It is easy for you to claim that I am lying, but you have still failed to provide the "truth" with any support... In the words of Nox..."PROVE IT!". Whilst you may not be a failed politician, you have the traits of one... the avoidance of the question, which means one thing... lies.

p.s. I'm not the resident Mr.-Know-It-All, I am merely a visitor. Who knows all.

Castro is not a tyrant, the country is not an armpit, and people aren't being repressed? Wow, thanks for clearing that all up for me. It makes sense, the people want to leave the island to spread the glory of Communism, but Castro won't let them. He knows his people are far to sensitive to be allowed into the rest of the harsh world. I guess those Cuban will just have to wait like patient Jehova's Witnesses for the day when they are allowed to go out and prostelatize the rest of the world.

The preceding was absolute crap, so was Chuckstone's post.

No. You are the one who made the authorship claim and I asked for a sample of same. I will not waste my time trying to prove/disprove your wild claims. Your credibility quotient is already neigh unto zero.

Please be specific about what "proof" it is that I need to provide. I truly do not know what are the specifics you are talking about.

People want to leave every country. But it appears that only Cuba's emigrants have hidden meaning. Of course they don't like Cuba, you can't expect 100% of everyone to like it can you? I know there are millions of Americans living in England, the difference is that England lets Americans in. The Cubans are free to leave, I have no idea where the strange idea that they are trapped in a prison island came from. They just have trouble getting into America.

what we have here is a wave of posts discrediting me based on a fact that is not true... and Nox, who is a closed minded idiot hell bent on insulting me... Don't you have a job to be doing?

More of your falsehoods. US law states that any Cuban reaching our shores is IMMEDIATELY granted asylum. Now moron, you get your "facts" straight. Remember, you are the one who "knows all".

As far as insults- you betcha. You insult common sense, not to mention intelligence every time you post.

You surely misunderstand me, Cubans are okay IF THEY GET INTO AMERICA (or is it deliberate stupidity to make me angry?). That kind of law is jsut a clever attempt by the Government to fool you into believing their little stories abou the evils of Catro. "He may look like Santa, but he's quite the opposite... the ANTI-SANTA" sort of attituse.

I know that by now I should be used to being confused, but HUH!?!

Cuba does not restrict the travel of its citizens? It people are merely avid fans of Junkyard Wars and want the ultimate challenge of building a boat out of scrap from a dump and then sailing it across the ocean. The Cubans aren't oppresed, they merely enjoy a good challenge and want to prove to the world that they are a tenacious and clever people, the cream of the crop of Communism.
