| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Chucky gets his wish
From 9:00 Totse time on 5 Nov 2002 until approximatly midnight of the same day, Nox will be at the polls serving as a voting judge.
This means for that approximately 15 hour period Chucky gets his wish, total freedom to say anything he wants to say without fear of "The censorship of Nox".
However, after midnight, all bets are off.
So Chucky, give it your best shot. You have plenty of advance notice, so you should be ready. Be careful about starting too soon...but at 9:00 you are safe, because I will be required (by law) to be at and remain at the polling place until we are finished which should be right around midnight (Totse time).
Now that I've finished with the nonsense, I would like to take this opportunity to fully encourage all eligible voters to vote, regardless of your personal politics. Voter apathy is unforgivable. I don't care if you don't like any of the candidates...find the lesser/least of evil/s and vote for that person.
'Nuf said.
*Nox knows it was a cheap and silly way to get folks to read a plug about getting out to vote*

Hey, hopefully the Democrats won't scream "recount!". Then you'll be gone for weeks. Or you might get detained as a material witness when they take it to court.

I don't know. Sometimes recounts are neccessary.
In the last election for governor we had dead people voting. (Stupid state regulations outlawed requiring identification.)

Re: Chucky gets his wish
I'm sorry Mr. Nox, but I will go to the polls when an honest person runs for any office, and not to choose the lesser of two evils. I firmly believe that was how Hitler got elected.

Global,
I understand your point, however, Hitler got elected anyway. Had enough people with your attitude changed their minds and voted, history could have been changed.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
Correct. At the time he wasn't considered as politically "bad" as his opponent. And the politicos in charge thought they could "control" him and keep him from getting out of hand.
I remember history and I will not be party to repeating it.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
People didn't vote for the Nazis as the lesser of two evils. They voted for the Nazis because of Hitler's appeal and the lack of appela of the other parties. You don't win several elections under a proportional representation system just by being the "lesser evil"
And Hitler got appointed as Chancellor after Hindenburg had exhausted all his other options.

And with the approval of Von Papen who knew he could 'keep Hitler under control'. Nox

Re: Chucky gets his wish
No one voted the Nazi's in... Hitler just assumed power...
Voting for the better man is how the system works. You might say they aren't honest, but their not a pure destructive force. Sure they ain't perfect...

Re: Chucky gets his wish
Hindenburg would have had to appoint Hitler with or without the agreement of von Papen since no other Chancellor had the support of the Reichstag, as the disastrous failures of von Papen and von Schleicher showed. It's remarkable that Hitler even agreed to limit the numbers of Nazis in the cabinet.
The real act of stupidity from the Reichstag was the passing of Hitler's "enabling act" - the elected Nationalists and Centre party representatives effectively ceding their right to play a part in the governing of the country.
Far from Hitler "assuming" power, his success in the 1930s is a classic example of the dismantling of a democratic state using legitimate, democratic methods.

Nox, this is slightly off topic, but what state are you a judge in? I'm interested because I'm curious about how the voting system varries depending on the state.

I will be voting tomorrow, and I think no matter how bad the choices are, everyone who can...should vote. Politicans count on the younger generation not voting, I think we should prove them wrong.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
The Reps. and Dems. pretty much rule each other out. Vote for the third party! Libertarian.
They are splitting up the vote this year into two days. If your voting Libertarian or Republican go on Tuesday.
If you were thinking Green or Dem. Party, they already said to go on Wednesday.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
Why do people naturally assume that Hitler was born evil. When he was elected Chancellor, all his policies were in the interests of Germany (some would say his later policies were too), but power corrupts, and evevntually he was forced to make himself a dictator to get things done... and that was when it happened. The power corrupted him and he went mad!
I can detect a very similar chain of events to 30s Germany in 00's USA. Unpopular son of an unpopular president lies, cheats and uses family ties to achieve his goal of becoming President. Uses propaganda to convince the populace that everyone else likes him so the population "go with the majority" and think they like him too. (see Asche's lines study). Then uses a national disaster to instill a massive sense of fear amongst the populace and uses this to gain the authority to make "Emergency laws" using these to detain political opponents without trial (see Camp X). Now we have the rapid expansionist attitude employed by Hitler in the 30s (see Afghanistan, Iraq) albeit in the guise of "liberation" which frankly is a joke!
You must remember that Hitler was loved by the majority, and he only persecuted minorities, who were generally hated by the majority anyway (Gays, Jews, Communists... hey that last one seems familiar... persecution of Communists I mean, Charlie Chaplin for instance). USA has a minority of Arabs, and Communists. The circumstances are different but the symptoms are the same!

Re: Chucky gets his wish
Hitler's views didn't change significantly after his ascent to power. He never even pretended to believe in democracy, freedom of thought or expression or Germany's post WWI borders.
America's situation is totally different. Even if bush had megalomanic, dictatorial ambitions, he doesn't possess the personal charisma to ensure people's absolute loyalty to him.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
He does have all those tendencies. And if it isn't charisma that keeps you licking his toes and believing any old shit he tells you (Democrats tried to cheat? Does anyone have a memory span of less than 12 seconds?) then you must all be just too stupid to see it.
Can you not see how he is exploiting you for his own ends? Did you really believe him when he said that the Kyoto Agreement was a waste of money? Do you not realise that the War on Terrorism is just an attempt to forcibly expand the American Empire. You can't go around forcibly liberating unwilling peoples without fear of criticism. But you think it's okay because it's in the name of "freedom"? Grow up America, to the real world, you sound like a bunch of 5 year olds playing cowboys and indians (and the indians are always the bad guys?). And I wonder exactly how many average Americans actually know where Iraq is. "Is it near the Japs? those Commie bastards"
And who said that USA was Communist? CAN YOU READ? H-E-L-L-O. D-O Y-O-U S-P-E-A-K-Y Z-E E-N-G-L-I-S-H? Didn't think so.

It's Nox's job to make sure people don't vote Democrat. And if they do he has to burn the ballot boxes! And the Republicans won't send those pictures of him and the sheep to his wife.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
Bush isn't anywhere near smart enough to completely brainwash everyone into giving him absolute power. Nixon and Kissinger were alot better at it, and they came alot closer.
And the USA the epitome of a pseduo-Capitalist imperial power.

Re: Chucky gets his wish
You don't really seem to need intelligence to fool Americans (this isn't racism, it's an observation). And how the hell is USA "psuedo"-capitalist. The President is actually controlled by the companys (not vice-versa) so you can't have it more capitalist than that

ChuckStone I was beginning to take your ideas into consideration up to the part about how Americans are like whiny five year olds. Trying to get someone to believe your side of the argument is right via insults and obnoxious [sp?] behaviour is not a good idea and I suggest you remember that for the future.

Nixon didn't use foul means to gain power.
He even refrained from demanding a recount when Kennedy was elected falsly because he believed it would weaken the presidency.

Well he wanted to (Nixon was awesome) but he called up Eisenhower, and Eisenhower talked him down and told him he'd have his chance.
