| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. Petition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
Amendment 8 of the U.S. Constitiution: Excessive bail shall not be required nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
This is wrong. Because of this amendment we have to spend on average over $20,000 on each prisoner, each year. There are over 2 million prisoners in the system. If we could use some of the worse prisoners as a source of manual labor, we could actually profit off of these prisoners, rather than treating them better than the rest of the populace. I could ramble on for years on why this right is wrong, and should be repealed. Use common sense, prison would not be a walk in the park if we could actually punish prisoners, and therefore prison could be used as a deterrent to prevent others from preventing crimes. Not only that, but we could also balance out the budget, we would be making money off of prisoners rather than spending money on them. A mining camp would be a great place for a rapist. If you would support the abolishment of the eighth amendment please reply saying something along the lines of: "Yes, I believe that prisoners should be treated like prisoners, and the first step to doing this is repealing the eighth amendment." Thanks

Yeah, Clinton spent 30 BILLION every year on a war on drugs, and he didn't even have a plan. Clinton sucked.

Re: Petition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
In this arena, I believe that you are partially correct.
First of all, I agree with the idea that prisoners should be forced to preform manual labor. It would teach them to not do whatever they did again, and would both allow us to get something out of the prison system, and to cut sentances so that prisoners do not have to spend huge chunks of their lives in a hole.
However, I do not think that the fault should be placed on the constitutional ammendment. It is rather our bad interpretation of said ammendment. I do not believe that hard labor is cruel, and after a while, it would become usuall

Re: Petition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
While we're at it, let's repeal the 1st ammendment. There's no reason that horrible commie pinkos should be allowed to poison the average good American with their pseudo-Marxist, weak kneed filth.
I echo Mouse's sentiments. Ending the drug war would probably scratch 50% of violent crimes, dissolve gangs, and seriously help our judges deal with actual criminals

Why not take away their Hilton like cells, and treat them as if they actually are in a prison.

Re: Petition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
Why not increase their sentances because most criminals will re-offend as soon as they get out.
As for labour camps, good idea, but what would you do without upsetting the economy.
You get 10,000 prisoners and get them working hard and thats 10,000 people who would have been doing it redundant.
I think the most simple answer is get them working on prison products so that the prison system is self generating.

Most prisons aren't Hilton-like. There's a few, but those are for the white collar criminals and such. Most prisons are pits of ass-raping. The best thing to do would be to end the war on drugs.

Sardinia!
Too bad we don't control it.
I don't think prison-labor would upset the economy. Most American jobs don't focus on producing anything, anyway. We could put them to work on automobiles, which would help us take back the market from the Japanese.

Karl, it's called sarcasm. SARCASM, YOU MOTHERFUCKER! SARCASM!
Spirit, the problem is Colin Powell would take control of the prison island and attempt to create a civilized state. He'd either pravail as the president of this island, or get killed by Alan Keyes. I might just back your idea just to get rid of Al Sharpton.

You are all racist motherfuckers. AND PRISONS ARE NOT PITS OF ASSRAPING!!!! They only get raped occasionally in the shower. I think that should be stopped. People in prisons should be raped everywhere. When they are doing hard labor and they drop a tool there should be a big guy named bubba behind them going "oh yeah, when I am done with this, you ask for more!" They should be raped so much, that eventually they develop calluses on/in their asses.

Re: Petition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution
>>>Most prisons aren't Hilton-like. There's a few, but those are for the white collar criminals and such<<<
A prisoner does not deserve e-mail, nor the other things ACLU has gotten for them. Do you see the problem with forking over your money to support some armed robber's "right" to his own e-mail, in his own cell? States should begin implimenting the Arizona Tent City Prison, which bans smoking, improving their education, and more.
>>>Spirit, the problem is Colin Powell would take control of the prison island and attempt to create a civilized state<<<
Not really, Most are no where near civilized, Take Pelican Bay, where prisoners routinely shit on the floors just outside their cells, beat and kill each other. Maybe someone will take leadership, but they would not be able to form a leadership able to create a civilization on an Island.
>>>People in prisons should be raped everywhere. When they are doing hard labor and they drop a tool there should be a big guy named bubba behind them going "oh yeah, when I am done with this, you ask for more!" It IS a fantasy of mine that one day prisons will actually be as prisons should be. The implied thing though is just not nice. You are a meanie.

Duh. The message that the quote in question was included in simply was meant to say that the fallacy that prisoners are raped daily is a fallacy of the incorrect kind (as most are). The last couple quotes were put in there so people would notice me because I have a very sad, sad life.

That's not racism. I doubt any intelligent black people take Al Sharpton seriously.
"Look ye racist motherfucker, I think ye really seriously underestimate Colin Powell. He could be and should be our first black president, and he is one hell of a lot cooler than ye."
You seem to be implying that the only right thing to do, and that we have to do it, is to vote in a black president. Isn't it supposed to be unbiased? It shouldn't be made out to seem to be a quota.
And now... to the topic heh.
I agree that these prisons are getting revoltingly to comforting. I saw fuckin open Alcatraz back up. Cruel and unusual punishment seems to be meant to say "you can't go out and bust their kneecaps instead of throwing them in jail", not neccesarily that they shouldn't be punished ex post facto.
About the prisoners doing manual labor and how it might effect the economy, I'm an economics major so let me throw in my input. One, this would be hard to get across on a state by state basis. Now in terms of the jobs they could be assigned to do, there are always jobs the government has lying around that are very easy to do. The government uses them as a form of economic injection when unemployment gets to high. The prisoners could just take over these public works. If unemployment became too high, then they should just be sent back to jail. There are tons of jobs they could do.
About the war on drugs, I'm as conservative as they come, but they do need to just legalize marijuanna. I would fuckin love to own a corporation that sells the shit. They do need to keep coke and shit out of there but weed is fine. I have never used it but I think they should. Everyone needs to get off of the backs of the cigarette companies too. I'm not sure how many crimes are directly linked to certain drugs, but these prisons do need to be a helluva lot tougher.

Dude! Colin Powell would be great, as long as he didnt get assasinated. Maybe, he really running shit behind the scenes. Al Sharpton is a damn fool. I don't know about the prison jumbo. And conservative who hates the drug war. Look into the libertarian party. They are the third largest party in the country and growing fast. On economics they are conservative, but still believe in real liberty, unlike the old, geezer republicans. Such as the drug war and other shit. The Green Party is larger then the Libertarian party.
And traditional conservates believe in legalizing drugs.
