| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
I think Legalization will allow the sale and manufacture of drugs, much like alcohol today.
Decriminilization will only allow posession of drugs. That means that if your caught selling drugs, you still get arrested.

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
well in my eye...decriminalization is the closest step to legalization...i also believe that it will be the biggest step that 'we' have had to make.
if we can decriminalize pot then that just means that we are getting closer and closer to the fact that together...we can pass something through the legal system.
did that come out wrong?

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
Make possession of 2 oz. and less of weed legal. Concentrate on the ones bringing it into the country, if you must. That would fall under decriminalization, I believe, and IMO better than fully legalizing it.. as much as anyone says weed isn't that bad, I'm hard-pressed to believe that letting people by a sack at the gas station is a good idea..
Yes, I'm changing my tune. I'm allowed.

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
legalization of marijuana;
decriminilization of all others for possession.
i think it's sad that 75% of the people whose lives are ruined by drugs is because of getting busted with it.

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
1. Cannabis and hemp are the same. "Marijuana" was the Mexican name given to cannabis. 2. Cannabis was first cultivated in China around 4000 BC 3. The original drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper. 4.One acre of hemp will produce as much paper as four acres of trees. 5. Hemp is a source of fiber for cloth and cordage for rope. The hemp fiber is located inside the long stem of the plant. 6. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp. Washington, our first president, declared, "Make the most of the hemp seed. Sow it everywhere." 7. Hemp seed is nature's perfect food. The oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of essential (any acids and the lowest percentage of saturated fats. 8. Sterilized hemp seed is commonly sold as birdseed. 9. Rolling papers, like Bambu, are made from hemp paper. 10. In 1937, the Marijuana Tax Stamp Act prohibited the use, sale and cultivation of hemp/marijuana in the United States. 11. Five years later, during World War II, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the film, "Hemp For Victory," which encouraged American farmers to grow hemp for the war effort. 12. Hemp is cultivated all over the world. Today, China, Korea, Italy, Hungary, Russia and France are among the countries that grow hemp for liber, paper and other products. 13. Cannabis is classified as a schedule 1 drug by the Food and Drug Administration. Designated as a narcotic, it cannot be prescribed by physicians to patients. 14. In 1888, the DEA's own administrative law judge concluded that "marijuana is one of the safest, therapeutically active substances known to man." 15. Cannabis can be used as a medicine to treat nausea, pain and muscle spasms. It alleviates symptoms of glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, migraines and other debilitating ailments. 16. Thirty-five states have passed legislation permitting medical use of marijuana. 17. Twelve Americans receive prescribed marijuana from the U.S. government. 18. More than 400,000 Americans are arrested each year on marijuana charges. 19. More than 400.000 Americans die from diseases related to cigarette smoking each year.
More than 150,000 Americans die of alcohol abuse each year. But in 10,000 years of usage, no one has ever died from marijuana.

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
It is possibly to die from marajuana as with inhaling any smoke brings carcinogens into the lungs. But for the average user their is no signifigant risk other than of operating machinery while intocixated. The only known long term side effect of extended use is memory loss and stunted growth when used habitualy/daily at a young age.
It was outlawed origionaly by the stamp act to deport mexicans. Then after kessey succesfully challenged the stamp act as it violated the fifth ammendment it was made illegal by the congress because of its connection to the hippie movement which at the time was veiwed as subversive.
My opinion is that all so called illicit subtances should be made legal because the crime which is the hallmark of a black market, and the degredation of americans constitutional rights in the name of an unwinnable war are more dangerous than the effects of the substances upon their users and society. www.libertarian.org

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
marijuana was outlawed because during the depression they were going to tax it to stimulate the economy.
the marijuana stamp tax act is the actual law i believe.
they were going to use it to make paper, clothes at a considerable cheaper rate.
there was a guy by the name of DuPont who was one of the few millionaires during the depression.
he made his millions being in the timber industry(the major producer of paper and paper products).
he was looking at going bankrupt with the taxation of marijuana.
he used his political influence to lobby for illegalization and won.
instead of the depression ending by 1934 we didn't fully get out of it until germany invaded poland and we started producing for a war effort which ends a depression in any country.
DuPont meanwhile learned a valuable lesson of not putting all his eggs in one basket.
meanwhile;
how many people lives have been ruined so a timber industry mogul could keep his pocketbook lined with green paper.

Re: legalization vs decriminalization
Incorrect all three of you: Lostmind the stamp act was made to illegalize marajuana in the same way that the machine gun stamp act was origionaly made to outlaw the tompson submachine gun. The marajuana stamp act is not a valid measure for taxation as it was created with a catch 22 that to get a stamp you had to be in possesion and therefore already in violation of the law.
Redrover The major outcry against marajuana came from the american southwest, where it was used by mexicans, their was some outcry in the south against marajuana but that was because it was associated with jazz clubs and black people, the main push came from the southwest. The law was used as a pretext to force deportations of mexicans, who durring the depresion were seen as taking jobs from whites.
finaly goat boy, no its considered schedule 1, for those of you who are not up on the lingo that means that big daddy white boss, the us government, says, contrary to the proven evidence accumulated by the medical community, that marajuana has no medical use. They erroniously say the exact same thing about extasy, origionaly called empathy by the medical community that related one session under its effect to a years worth of couples therapy.
