"How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. Government types
Just out of curiosity, what kind of gov't would you all like to have?
I myself think our gov't is doing fairly well at staying out of my way and protecting itself.
Go Democracy.
I still don't grasp the concept of republican vs. democratic.
If someone would like to enlighten me, feel free.

Re: Government types
basicly, democracy is when the people vote on issues pure democracy means that every one votes on every issue. Since that would be difficult we form republics in which we elect people to represent us and vote on issues the form of government in The united states is known as a democratic republic.

Re: Government types
Anarchy is not a superior form of government. Without some centralized government we would not nearly have the prosperity that we enjoy today.

Re: Government types
Man will always create social orders and government, that won't change. Anarchy has never occured exept as an Idea. Ideally the cost of society is that you do as you will without infringing on the rights of another. It is sad but government is necessary to ensure this via a legal system. Another cost of prosperity in the more tangible sence of paying for a road structure and other infrastructure but the cost of this is greatly out weighed by the gain.

Re: Government types
we do not have a democracy, we have a representative democracy. the way i understand democracy is where the people make all decisions, we vote people in to make those decisions for us.

Re: Government types
We live in a society were the power to vote on every law was suspended. This was due to the foresights of our forefathers. They felt that uneducated people shouldn't make everyday decsions in a government. This is why we vote for people to represent us and they are suppost to be more intellegent than the common person. What happens when this person doesn't meet these requirements? We get the majority of elected officals. Higher public education is required for a democracy and a republic. The reasons for a democracy are obvious; people vote, people need to be informed. The republic isn't so obvious, but follows the same princapal. Since the public votes the representatives into office they need to be able to pick the best person for the position. For this they need to be informed and understand how it will affect them. So the real way to get rid of the problem would to be able to educate more people and hopefully reduce the amount of influence the government has over poeple and allow the mandatory influences to be more accessable. I would say via the internet but there are way to many problems with that. Authentication, security and so forth.

Re: Government types
education is a two-way street, you have to want to learn to be educated. you can spend all the money on education you want, but the kids have to want to learn for it to do any good.

Re: Government types
Thanks Alan, that was informative. I have never been able to understand why we have republican and democratic governments.
I feel a changed man!
Lostmind, read Alan's post please it basically says the same thing.
Everyone, thanks for your imput. I am glad most of you are sane enough to know what you are talking about. I was actually hoping for some communist/socialist/anarchist to come on and fight for his position, but when you think about it... yeah.

Re: Government types
a good point was brought up to me the other day, every four years in america the race is on to pass new laws, as promises for being elected.
there has to be a point in a free society as we call ourselves when you will run out of laws to pass that don't take away freedoms.

Re: Government types
every law passed takes away freedom...a law is something that curbs some sort of right that was free before
look at the first amendment to the constitution..the right to free speech...to give someone free speech you must curb someone elses right to free speech...
and laws are rules....rules can be broken... real laws cannot...you cannot break the law of gravity...
we pride ourselves on the fact that we preserve freedoms when all we do when we elect someone for thier promises is just asking them to take away our freedoms ....if a law gives you freedom or doesnt effect you...it effects someone else...

Re: Government types
I don't get it ==> "look at the first amendment to the constitution..the right to free speech...to give someone free speech you must curb someone elses right to free speech..."
why do you think that? Do you mean ==> In giving someone free speech you are taking away another man's right to refute that point or at least tell him he is a stupid asspirate?
In my opinion, they didn't take away anything worth having in the Bill of Rights. In no way do i argue with being allowed to have a gun, say what I want, or assemble to petition.

Re: Government types
free speech would always occur as would the bearing of arms if not for government. The constitution was made to limit the powers of the necessary evil of government. where the legal code is the law that the people must follow, the constitution is the law that the government must follow.

Re: Government types
you know i've always thought that about the bill of rights, why do we need rights written down. the key to free speech is that to write it down as a right, is to say that it didn't exist before and the fear that it might not exist again. how can a free society have laws and call itself free, besides those which are considered to be morally right, like do not steal, do not committ murder, if we are truly free aren't those the only laws we need, just calling us free should be able to handle the bill of rights in itself.

Re: Government types
but there will always be those people that will kill steal rape ect. Government exists ideally to protect people from those that are not moral. government you might say exists to enforce the basic vlaues of a society such as dont kill dont steel dont rape, and it exists because there will always be people that will do these things. Ideally you shouldn't have to have a government for people to cooperate peacefully but pragmaticly you must. The thing that is most telling about every hypothetical utopia like anarchy every created is that the word utopia literally means no place.

Re: Government types
Hero, your first post is definitions of democracy and republic. These are very different from Democrats and Republicans. Though their entymologies are probably the same, the meanings are very different. Goat, dheck out www.rnc.org or www.democrats.org for what each party represents. In a nutshell, Republicans - smaller government, lower taxes, less aid from the government, Democrats - larger government, more taxes, more government aid. Remember these are extremely simplified definitions.
