| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

What is wrong with windows XP?
Give me some reasons why it's so bad. I just want to hear some of your opinions, I mean, I know it's bad, but what specifically bothers you?
I personally hate the interface...

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?
I actualy think it is quite a good OS (as far as windows goes). However 2k is better. Most of what people blame windows for is human error and them not understanding how the system works. However I also reinstall windows about every month because I like to have it run at max. If you take care of the OS it will run smoothly.

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?
Win Xp is pretty good. It's got stability and you are able to run most games under it bla bla bla. But a feature that I'm quite fond of is the emulation bit. Having said that, damn Microsoft policy and the dodgy shit they do. I don't hate the stuff they make, but the stuff they do and the tactics they employ piss me off.

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?
Would you say a switch from xp to RedHat would be better? And what is the best GUI when using it?
I'm using xp in my laptop, but I want to partition it and put RedHat and then erase XP and put win2k. *(But I'm not that familiar with RedHat)* That way I can transfer all the files from one partition to another, then erase the xp partition and put win2k and transfer my files back. But I'm not so experienced with it....

If you are going to be using NTFS file systems with you "new" win2k install then you are running a big chance of fucking the partition by writing to it from linux. The latest linux kernel has full NTFS read support but only experimental NTFS write support...

Oh crap, thanks for the advice dude. I'll just hook it up to my other computer and transfer the files there then I'll install the OS.

I find this hard to believe, seeing as how flood control is active for about ten seconds... Unless, of course, you type at 9435 words per minute...

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?
Yes, I type at an incredibly fast rate. No, I was doing something quite odd, as usual I'll open up all the posts that interest me at once, so I can reply while my 56k loads. I typed up my big rant and before posting it, for some reason, I changed to a different window, posted, switched back to the rant window, and had a darkie because I lost my post (which was enourmous). ARRGH I have a blood blister now too Anyway the rant basically ended in me saying that I really don't like the overly-user-friendlyness of XP, and too many bells and whistles. Popups asking stuff, etc. And that I'd starting insulting other things with the name "XP" for that reason- a few things that got this treatment were winamp3, the new windows media player, and MSN messenger 5. Nah, the anti-flood thing is 30 seconds, not 10. edit: spelling [This message has been edited by skalez (edited 12-23-2002).]

And a few other things: It chomps resources and hd space The interface totally fucking pisses me off And it takes too long to boot on my 800mhz
Plus, add those thnigs to the fact that 2000 is better for a network environment, and 98 is better for a gaming environment.

1. anti piracy bullshit 2. its not GNU 3. its unstable (i dont want to hear any bullshit on this one because you cant compare it to windows ME. Unix is the way stability should be, not XP.) 4. incredibly bloated 5. new IE bundled with it sucks 6. new search feature takes too much time 7. adds nothing usefull over 2k but takes away alot fo networking features 8. has an insane amount of buffer overflow vulns
i can go on and on but i wont because no one man has enought ime to fully slag windows.

Just one argument for #7: XP offers more compatability over 2000 or NT.

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?
What kind of processor is it? If it's a P4, then big deal, that chip doesn't have enough cache to make it having 2.4 ghz speeds worth it.

You can be such an idiot. Besides your stupid responses here are ones that have answers: 1. Pro doesnt have that remote activation crap, not that its that big a deal if you got a legitimite copy anyway you wuss. Home misses some important security features. So cough up the extra hundred. 2. GNU is crap 3. ME is unstable because of the DOS base. XP uses a UNIX base. XP is super stable. you are an idiot 4. Mac is bloated 5. Its called SP1. You can uninstall IE. It was only originally stuck in there because the same system that handles folder viewing handles web viewing. Imagine if mac did that. Would you complain? 6. Whoop de do. It takes a whole minute. Don't have a minute to spare? Learn how to use it properly. 7. There are also lots of newer features. 8. about 30-90 Mb's of ram is not unreasonable. Especially for those of you with at least 512. Big advantage of Windows over mac? Free updates. Doesn't cost me a hundred bucks for SP1... IT's FREE BI-ATCH!

Re: What is wrong with windows XP?

Wow! there we have it folks! SpaceFalcon has enlightened us all with this provocative statement. quote: ME is unstable because of the DOS base
DOS is very stable. ME is unstable because of the shitty code, not the DOS base. quote: Mac is bloated
So is your ego. quote: XP uses a UNIX base.
Proof? Link? XP is built on NT/2000 code. The TCP/IP stack however was probably borrowed Berkley, modified and degraded. quote: There are also lots of newer features.
Features do not equal functionality or usefulness.

1. so having pro avialable is supposed to justify this inconvenience and labeling every computer user a criminal? and why should i have to pay more? its not like its any harder to just leave out the anti piracy software, in fact its easier. 2. i dont think you even know what GNU is. if it is such crap then please share your crap experience with some GNU software, unless of course you have no experience with it. 3. cense already addressed this. even the worthless cunts at microsuck will admit that XP is just windows 2000 with some minor modifications, which in essence is NT based, not unix. whos the idiot now? 4. what is "mac"? there are quite a few mac OS's. if you mean OSX then i would agree that there are some features that are not needed by everyone but its trim as a supermodel with anorexia compared to windowsXP. 5. why the hell should i need a service pack? if i wasnt a "wuss" and paid $300 for XP pro it should work flawlessly from the second i buy it, not after i wait monthes for a shoddy service pack that often creates more security issues than its fixes. 6. once again why should i have to learn to use it "properly" when it worked better in an earlier version. even if i use it "properly" it takes longer to operate. 7. like what? how many of them are actually usefull and not half assed garbage that pales in comparison to third part software? 8. 30 to 90 my ass, the box even specifies that you need at least 128 megs of ram. about 90-100 megs of that will be consumed by the OS not 30. i doubt you can even boot up using only 30 megs. and why should i need all of that ram when i can run linux with X a sawfish and gnome all in 32 mags of ram? your big atvantage is a joke. windows updates are not updates at all, they are bug fixes. OSX updates are real updates that add new funtionality in adition to fixing bugs. when was the last time a windows update added a usefull feature? now compare that to the other five thousand that were released to "update" some shitty code that they hoped wouldnt be exploited but was anyway. i think you lost all your credability the second you claimed that windowsXP is unix based.

1. Pro costs the same as any of the older OS' when they were released. If you already have a privious Windows than it wont hurt now will it? 2.I've used GNU programs for things like C++. They were not helpful. Borland C++ (or turbo C++) is better. 3. Duh, just now its more designed for home convinience 4. OSX I almost like. 5. Nothing works flawlessly when it is first produced. Plus half the patches are solving things that were not apparent upon creation (such as someone hacking in such a way that they can beat the security. Especially since they work off the flaw with a program they created AFTER initial release.) 6. The old one was too general. And it's not really difficult at all to use the current one. Don't mess with any options and it's just like the old search types. 7. I will concede this point since I kept thinking office XP and no real examples. Tablet pcs have that journal thing... that doesnt really help the argument...nevermind. 8. yup 30 to 90. you need at least 128 because if windows is take ALL your memory you cant do anything else. Besides RAM is super cheap. also: Linux isn't Windows. It's great...just not windows.

Also: Several. SP1 update completly changes XP so you can do things such as remove Windows messenger, IE6, added some new functionality into the control panel. Several updates do contain real updates not just bug fixes as you like to call them. 1. Windows XP Journal Viewer would be a new update since the whole journal thing was created with tablet PC's 2. Drivers can be updated through the update site. 3. Movie maker 1.2 was installed through update. 4. .NET Framework can be installed through update site. 5. Euro conversion tool was added via same. 6. The service pack for IE6 7. The numerous bug fixes make Windows better
