| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: can they monitor downloads?
Every request you send out (from school computers) to the net, and the response to that request is sent through a machine or several machines called gateways that the school board owns. Whether or not they actually take the time to look through logs manually or automatically is inconsequential to the fact that THEY CAN.
If you wanna look at porn or download stupid games without being monitored by your school board, do it at home.

Re: can they monitor downloads?
its been my experience that the mods for school networks dont know there assholes from a hole in the ground. yes they can monitor damn near everything u can do. but do they have the brains for it is the better question. probably not. my network admin couldnt figure out why the computer wasnt turning on. ill give u one guess what the problem was.

Re: can they monitor downloads?
Most bess implementations nowadays will look throught the content of the HTTP data stream, not just the URL so if your page has "bad words" in the content then even a proxy wont help you view it (unless the proxy mangles the data).

When your school blocks a website, what is the screen that comes up? I mean, what program or hardware are they using? It better not be that St. Bernard crap, I hate that shit. -=MaTrIXSpirit=-

Re: can they monitor downloads?
i remember a artical in 2600 where if u got the IP for a website X 255 for each 1.1.1.1 u could use that as a URL. id have to dig up the artical to be totaly right. memorys hazy it had to have been a while ago.

Re: can they monitor downloads?
Yes, that way we won't have to use DNS servers if the blocking system that they're using blocks websites by actuall names; the problem is that the filter system that they use at my school blocks out by IP adresses.

Re: can they monitor downloads?
our school network is quite a joke. They have "hidden" the c:\windows folder but merely typing that in will allow you access. Once in there there is an image file entitled student800x600.gif this contains that computers background file. Me editing this file to say FUCK SCHOOL caused a 1 hour repair time for a 2 minute prank. just to name but one example.

The x 255 trick does not work, because it block the websites by IP address, not by website name./ -=MaTrIXSpirit=-

Re: can they monitor downloads?
well, i have 2 weeks vacation now, so no checkin out the skool comps now. but is there anyways of using somin or doin somin so they cant see wat im downloadin? or, would it be a lot better if i used someone elses log in name? my skool is stupid cause they have sceennames from "student1" to like "student20" and they give everyone the passwords in the begining of the year cause they havent given most people a sceenname yet, so should i use one of the "student(anynumber)" users?

Re: can they monitor downloads?
its always good to mask your identity or change it all together. if u can use a teachers login name. if u want to get realy sneaky theres keyloggers that are as big as a half a cig u can stick into the keyboard port. do this on a dumb teacher. i dont know how much they cost but if its found just forget about getting it back. but then again the dumb shit will probably think its apart of the comp.
