Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default Crazy idea.....

Okay, I have about 8 free gigs of space on my harddrive. I have an idea but dont know if itd work, so help me out and tell me if im nuts or not.....

I want to install a linux distro [perhaps mandrank simply because i have it on cd. windowsx wont run so thats why i dont have it on already] and then setup a root password, and a coupla user passwords with passwords i dont know. like just scribbles of characters. or get someone to input them for me. then, i would like to be able to do one of these:

get into the linux partion from windows, like linux can get into windows. i dont know if it can be done, but maybe? if so then i would liek to try and gain access to root files and such. as well as user files. that way i have to find passwords and things. i have many books on running linux for beginners, and expertsa nd such and i think soemthing like this would encourage me to read them. kidna silly sounding, but breakinng into a file would just seem like a cool thing to do, and it'de be fun. so youre having fun learning! [say what!? fun while learning!?]

or.....

be able to somehow block off a few windows files the same way, with different levels of security. i dont know if encrypting them is the only way!? cuz to get into that youde have to liek find a code in the file, and put it together to get access without a password huh? thatd be tedious! and if you can setup a password then try and access thourough linux, and perhaps [sigh] written notes from the files.

so, what do you think? these arent hacking guide files or anything. these are files on things like linux commands for beginners, and netwokring, and such. as well as shell programming, which starts very simple, some c[++] books, java, html, tcp/ip, and telnet and some more. so you can see thats a lot to read, but i got them when i could instead of one at a time so now it seems like a whoels hit load. but if i have reasons to read them i can.

thanks.

The best method for accessing, then cracking passworded system is through boot floppies. I've never known windows to be able to access ext2/ext3/reiserfs/xfs partitions. I could be wrong. A linux or other unix system boot floppy could easily access the file system. Same goes for windows, just a quick boot floppie for either vfat or ntfs (read-support).

not sure if any of this is what you are getting at...

there are programs out there that let you read ext2/3 and reiserfs from windows, but if you have physical access to a machine then you're already in...
