Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default Stupid Question By Non-Hacker

Okay, don't flame the n00b, but I've got a question for all the hackers out there. Just out of curiosity (wink wink), is there some kind of encryption setup that can beat the government's passive data miner systems? Obviously, if they specifically target you, you can't beat them, but is there something that can stand up to Carnivore and that sort of thing? Any info is appreciated.

Well, you'd be best at hiding your data. In a matter of speaking, making it look like something it's not.

I doubt that you'll get a STRAIGHT answer here. Just think about hiding data. What else can it LOOK like?

*wink wink*

Okay, no more winking and ambiguity. I know next to nothing about this kind of thing. What CAN I make it look like?

If you're really worried:

Say you have maps of some government building. Make them look like some art you've drawn! A butterfly or something. If you do it well only you will know what it is.

Encode your text files, not using some dumb cipher (easily broken), but so it looks like it's a legit document. Do weird stuff like the third letter of every word minus three letters is the letter, and if there is no third letter, it's a space. BUT MAKE IT LOOK LEGIT. Make it look like it's about some thing for your work. It's not hard

Do other cool stuff along the lines of the above. And don't use words that are likely to set off government stuff, e.g. terrorist, "let's build the bomb then" etc.

why would the government be targeting you? what are you looking at online that no one else is. they know what is online, and they do not care about some random. the only thing you ever have to hide is sensitive emails, and they are encypted easily (get PGP). i relly do not think that the government cares that you are looking at explosive recipies, or porn. if you are planning something stupid (and judging by your name, you are thinking about some crappy revolution or something) then you will be caught. they might not be able to crack the encryption (matter of debate), but there is ALOT more to security than the internet.

Why I want my files to be secure is really none of your damn business, but since you've decided to assume I'm a terrorist or something, I'll indulge. I don't like my files being looked at by the government, period. It's an ideological thing. My name is reflective of the fact that I 1) Am usually armed, and B) Enraged on a regular basis. The only "crappy revolution" I'm in favor of is an electoral one.

There, now that we've got the character assaults out of the way, back to the topic. I have PGP, or at least the version of it they're peddling over at Hushmail. I'm not being specifically targetted by any federal agency, nor do I expect to be, unless the government becomes so intensely paranoid that they need to monitor seventeen-year-olds who publish the occasional anti-government article. What I'm looking to avoid is the passive data-mining systems like Echelon and Carnivore. Can PGP stand up to those?

carnivore isn't passive mining, and yes, pgp can defeat it.

lol... silly terrorists with your alpha-numeric mixups and broken english... Encryption seems to be the steady trend for data protection.... but i think its just fad, in a year or two they'll be doing yo-yo's or something. Then it recycles every 20 years, so then we'll be using encryption again.. YaY... It's all automated now, anyway... "Computer, Take me to Godzilla Island!"
