Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default Damned hacker

This goddamned determined hacker is trying to hack into my PC. I'm not worried that much, but the hacker is slowing down my internet. How can I stop this hacker? I tryed unplugging my DSL and putting it back in, but there he is trying to get back in. My BlackICE firewall is the only thing stopping him.

Start attacking him back. Surely you know his IP by now. Unless he's sophisticated he probably didn't erase login trails. Give him a warning, and if he doesn't stop either have the authorities run a trace on him or fuck his computer up yourself.

I assume you are running some form of windows. winxp? turn off your remote desktop, simple file sharing, patch to latest version. 98? heh, there isnt much he can do about you, there isnt really anything to hack, winnuke?

Im going to take a wild guess here, but are you on irc and talking on dalnet? if so, its the dalnet proxy scanners.

edit: I am using winxp, with most services turned off, running windows xp firewall. There isnt much that he can actually "hack" since windows was never intended as a multiuser system and therefore does not come with remote administration functions. Windows 2k/xp systems do come with such features, however they can be turned off easily, and in most cases is not needed.

Also, lots of times you will get little alerts about pings, attempted connects, and so on so on. Dont worry, they are not attempts to hack you. Many things can cause this and generally, 90% of the time, it is NOTHIGN to worry about.

reprisal attacks are stupid. they accomplish nothing and anyone worth half a grain of salt will be proxied at the very least, if not using a dynamic IP, you'll end up attacking someone who isn't doing a god damn thing, and you'll probably get slapped for it...

Get a real firewall, black ice is useless. Get zone alarm.

how is blackice useless? when it comes down the the basic functions of a firewall, there isnt much difference. all that really matters when choosing a firewall would probabbly be user interface and ease of use. IMO the standard winxp firewall works better than most of the other ones, inculding zone alarm.

He keeps on trying. He can't get through because whenever he tries, I either unplug my internet or shut down my computer. I am running XP by the way. I don't know what he could want from my computer though.

I can't remember where but somewhere there was a comparison of several firewalls and BlackIce succomed to most of the attacks put on it. Perhaps they were using a shitty configuration. I don't know, I was just warning them about something that I had heard.
