Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Dialup BBSs are almost dead. They are not necessarily useful to hackers but they are a community. Take &totse for instance, this site used to be a dialup BBS.

A dialup BBS is exactly what it sounds like, you dial in and you access the bulletin board.

Yeah, I miss the ol' dial up BBS too...lovely ASCII and (if you were lucky) ANSI graphics, message boards, door games, email, newsgroups, connection speeds ranging from 300baud and up...

Most of all, I miss getting SysOp pages at all hours of the damn night and being forced to tack paging hours on because users are retarded. I miss the people who would just sign up under a new account and think you couldn't tell whenever you'd kick their other account...The ones that made callback verifiers the way to go...otherwise your overworked SysOp ass would be combing your user bases constantly trying to find the spoofed accounts...

I could go on and on, but I'm sure you're all bored as hell with my nostalgic rant and ramble....Though sometimes, I truly do miss the old dial up BBS...sometimes

is it a good thing that alot of bbs are becoming web sites? i mean the web based systems are easyer for newbies who wanna learn to hack and phreak but is this puting to much power in the wrong hands, could we be giving the crakers and kiddies who care only about damage and dont give a shit about exploration to much information?

If I were paying long distance rates for the time I spend here, it would cost me several times what I'm paying for net access.

Besides, how many users would we see from Canada, the UK, Australia, etc.?

So a dial up BBS, would be like dialing upto a server, with a certain number i take it? Like for example, you dial upto a 'server' which is basically just a bunch of organized posts....

the best way I can imagien it is like connecting to irc, but instead of havign real time chat, each time you must make a post.

Sorry, this is well before my day, so excuse me if Im way off! [well, I should correct myself. Im sure I was alive aorund all this, just too young!]

Think of it as like TOTSE, but you have to dial it with an analog modem, only a limited number of people can be on at once, and it's not near as snazzy in appearance. So, it's essentially a computer that you call to access forums/mail groups, archives, files, and a few other things...

Ah the good old days... I remember when "PhuckingPheak" logged on to &totse from my house... but routed the call through Isreal! (A Silicon Graphics PBX, in Isreal, specifically.)
