| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

I'm looking for an IP cloaker or something of that sort that can hide my true IP address while I am surfing the net. I need any one other than the following, which I ask you not to suggest for they do not work with my computer:
surfola.net the-cloak.com anonymizer.com
any others will do
thanks

Re: IP cloaker
you cant surf if the servers dont know your IP. its like trying to send letters without an address. if your reffering to a proxy, dont bother. they keep logs and they dlow your line down big time. the best thing to do is just accept that the internet was designed to be a public place

Okay, thanks. But still... If there's any way I can hide my true IP when surfing the internet, please tell me about it.

Re: IP cloaker
Depends who wants it and if you have been in contact with them on the net.
If your ISP wants your IP address, no shit, they will be able to get it... but joe blow on AOL might not be able to get my IP if I have not communicated with him directly.
It's not a yes or no answer. If some knowledged government worked wanted to find what IP you were using at a certain time, no fucking problem.
Its not some magically number either, its just like your post address. People HAVE to know it to send you stuff.

exactly. BSK how would you be able to hide your ip from an agency? i would like to hear this because you be a magician to do that. its like trying to recieve mail without a person knowing your address. and dont go citing proxies and wingates because they keep logs, even after they are deleted they can be recovered. just like the encryption argument its the same principle, you just have to make it harder than its worth

Re: IP cloaker
There are 2 servers next to each other in a network, both have a different connection to the internet, now I tell one of them to tell the other one via network that he should go to a website, would you be able to see the first one?
So lets say I got a post-office box in a foreign country. The post there isnt allowed to give the names of foreign post-office boxes or logs to the police, and they dont even know my adress, because the only thing they got is my secound post-office box in another foreign country. And they send any mail to a post-office box in my country. And guess what, I can even send you mail via these post-office boxes. Would you be able to figure out my adress?
There are different services for different things you want, but Im mainly talking about shells.

Re: IP cloaker
As unfortunate as it might be, some foreign countries are not as "protected" from the US as others. Im sure there are many countries that would happily allow US federal forces into their systems/logs if the US "asks" nice.
BSK, the first situation you talked about is a proxy. Nothing more, nothing less. And there are ways of figuing out who initiated the communication. Be that legally or illegally. The second situation is anologus (sp?) with forged email. Yes, anyone can forge email, but when the feds want the person forging that mail bad enough, they will get him.
I agree with both BSK and Syphon, I think you guys are arguing 2 different aspects of the same point. Which I believe I can generalize into:
Yes it is possible to cover your track on the net BUT its going to be really hard if you are trying to hide from big brother.

although this is not exactly the way we run, Im pretty sure that this not just a proxy. Because theres the network protocol between those two servers. Do you think that the web-page requesting server would send the web-server the information of the network protocol? Youve got a mail adress in russia, king of the locusts, you should know the situations in the successor nations of the soviets.

Re: IP cloaker
what do you mean by network protocol? they would both be tcp/ip for web surfing.
USER===tcp/ip===SERVER1====tcp/ip===SERVER2
is that what you are basicly describing. there has to be a protocol for the information to move. maybe they could be different protocols from the user to server one but the protocol to server two from server one would have to be tcp/ip. so it could be like
USER===syphonproto====SERVER1====tcp/ip===SERVER2.
if your getting web pages from a standard web server there has to be tcp/ip in there somewhere. in the diagram the "syphonproto" would be my own proprietary protocol. syphonproto could not talk to SERVER2 but there is still tcp/ip involved.

wrong:USER===tcp/ip===SERVER1====tcp/ip===SERVER2 is that what you are basicly describing. right:USER===tcp/ip===SERVER1====NW===SERVER2===tcp/ip===WebServer NW means network (whatever protocol). So Ill ask you again, would the WebServer be able to see Server1? Would he be able to see the USER?

Re: IP cloaker
clearly it would not but the sytems in between keep logs. what you are describing is a modified concept of a proxy. as i have said it before those packets still have an address. what would stop the person from finding the destination of the original packet, then where it is routed to? if its a protocol it would obviously have to be realeased publicly so people would realize how to determine the adressing schemes for it to work. no matter what proto you put into the middle it is still address based and it can be traced if enough time and resources are used

if you dont know how it works, dont tell me how it should work. The only thing the header of the IP-Packets to the WebServer would include is the ethernet-address of Server2, with a NAT-System not even this one. No cense, I just wanted to point at the area where to find the best proxies.

Re: IP cloaker
Ok BSK, sorry if my comment was a bit attacking, i just got kinda offended when I did not understand exactly what you were hinting at.
Definition time
proxy:
(1) A person authorized to act for another; an agent or substitute. (2) The authority to act for another. (3) The written authorization to act in place of another.
The situation you are describing is just a proxy. One machine is acting for another in your case. I know that its not exactly what we might think of when you say proxy in internet terms. But the that situation is the true definition of proxy.

Re: IP cloaker
well, Im not completely happy with this, because it would be just a (circuit-level-)proxy, if I was Server1, but Im the (extern) User, so this is not my bastion-host or caching proxy. But the network is something like a proxy, yes.

not to be a dick but i dont quite see what your saying. the language is a bit confusing to me. what do you mean by "with a NAT system not even to this one". i know what NAT is but i dont know what you are reffering to by "not even this one". like i said im not trying to be a dick and correct grammer mistakes (if there even is a mistake) but i just dont know what your trying to say [This message has been edited by syphon detonator (edited 06-06-2002).]

Re: IP cloaker
and you dont use public computers because they are more closely monitored than private computers. you dont always realize it but you are being kept track of or else every hacker wuold just use a library computer.
