| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: a few questions about wireless networking
well, first you would need to find out what freqencies that are being used.
then second you would need to get a account somehow (either sign up, or hack a WAN account)
I suggest hacking the account as it would anonymize you.
you could also use a scanner to find any frequenzies being used, and you could hijack yourself a ip from theire range.

Re: a few questions about wireless networking
Thats not the entire truth my friend. There are programs that scan frequencies, you dont need to know them any specific ones, and besides there is only a small band that *most* terrestrial wireless networks run within.
I suggest a wireless card and a yaggi (basically an antenna).
And half of "hacking" wireless access points is just finding one that is really crappy and lets you get an IP and get onto the network by simply sending a request, nothing special, just the lack of any security whatsoever.

Re: a few questions about wireless networking
there is no trick to finding the frequency. every 802.11b wireless network on earth operates at a frequency of 2.4ghz. just get netstumbler and a card that will work with it(it has to have the hermes chipset).
if you want to be badass then get wellenwriter or airsnort. im thinking wellenwriter is going to take the spotlight soon since it really is the best yet under developed at this point

Re: a few questions about wireless networking
True about the frequency BUT, not every terrestrial wireless network is a 802.11b network. Given, the ones in every downtown are almost positively 802.11b compliant but there are plenty of other wireless networks.

Re: a few questions about wireless networking
no since xp doesnt play nice with networkcards you will never get past the drivers installation(ok an exageration but...). use 98SE and netstumbler. it doesnt work well under NT systems
