Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default going away party

some seniors and i were going to give our school a going away party by completely deleting every single file that they have on their server. or at least just the important ones. do u guys know the legal reprocussions of this? we've looked on the net a lil but found a bunch of borin shit we didnt really care about. if the laws are state specific i live in WA state. oh and just as a side note, this year they went back to using paper to take attendance, then havin a kid send it to the office because last year i found the filname for the website they put attendance on (yeah it was a freakin website; these people suck nutz) while foolin around on the ftp server in my sixth hour comp tech class, and made so many people repeatedly absent until they got suspension and shit. never got me. that old fugga actually gave me the password.....pssh...

well there would certainly be serious problems if you were to get caught. many cyber crimes are now classified as terrorism under the "patriot" act. you can almost surely bet that you would face felony charges if you got caught and the school decided to prosecute. if you really know your stuff then the decision is yours, if your inexperienced then dont even thin about it becasue its not worth it.

It depends what security features your school has implemented and I just dont mean on the computer systems. If you are going to do it plan it well and you will get away with it dont and its almost certain you will get caught. Here are a few tips:

You can bet that the deleted files can be traced to a specific user, so dont do it in your own account. Also the admin can see login times so use two computers log yourself in on the innocent computer and you can say you where working on it, and log someone else in on the computer you will be using for the job.

Do the job when you have an excuse to be using one of the computers, so afterwards you have an excuse for being there.

Dont be a funny guy and tell the whole school your going to do it some one will grass on you.

Act the innocent if you are questioned about it, dont give them any verbal evidence against yourself, nine times out of ten what people say gets themselves busted.

Sit somewhere people wont look at your screen, hide the task bar and minimize all if someone walks past.

Also bear in mind what software you will need, dont have any disks on you after you have done the job, put all of the software on the account you will be using a few days before. But put it somewhere the owner of that account wont find it (Bury it in directories).

Know how you are going to do the job dont stumble around it or youll get caught try to plan it in you head or write it down.

Security Cameras can get you busted easily dont get seen on one when you shouldnt.

As for the legalities of doing what you want to do, the law is heavily stacked against you if you get caught, Im not that sure about America but as of the UK the Computer misuse act will get you in a lot of shit for fucking with other peoples computers maliciously or not.

A school probably isn't going to press charges. I got caught for hacking my old school's filtering proxy, and they just suspended me and threatened to kick me out if i didn't show them how i did it. Also, remember that they would have to have enough evidence to prosecute you, so don't leave that kind of evidence for them.

installing your tools ahead of time is a very poor idea. keep what you need on a floppy or two and thats all. if the admin finds the tools then hes just going to watch that account and bust your ass when you try something. in all honesty its no big deal to hack a schol network anymore but its your decision.
