| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: free high speed internet
they tie your cable service to both the serial number and MAC address of both the ethernet card and the cable modem here in mass. It's impossible to steal the service unless you hack the company and inserted an account for yourself. You could try looking for wireless networks, and if you find one plug into it. Or you could scam your ass the money for a cable connection. Dsl is pretty much impossible to steal too.

Re: free high speed internet
stealing is no good. I have cable, but im just crossing my fingers for the optical giants to file capter 11. Did you know were only using 2% of the optical wiring out there? once those companies AOL, Quest, ATT, Verizon, etc go bankrupt, then the price of broadband will be cut in half or better, putting it in your price range. I'm looking for a rerun of the railroad tycoons here,(1850-1910 or so..i think) all the companies went out of buisness, and then railroads became dirt cheap.

Re: free high speed internet
is your neighbor gonna let you split his service? As far as I know, for a wireless network you still have to have a hardwire into a local transmitter, and by splitting it you would probablyt both lose some channels/bandwith. The other problem is how the service would react to 2 IP addresses trying to run on the same cable. it used to work on the ATT service but that has since been switched to a proprietary ATT network which could be configured diffrently. I know computers on that network (ATT at home) are supposed to have dynamic IP's but for some reason mine is static. I saw a prog on my comp called IBM static IP or something, that could be responsible.

Re: free high speed internet
it isnt static since they use dhcp but since there are few cable users you can almost always count on getting that addy renewed. try hitting renew on your ip settings, youll get a new addy.
now for the sharing thing. your bandwidth would be shared so you dont get 400k, its split between the two of you. if you want to share over a longer distance then you need a fibre network, cat 5 wont cut it at longer distances, especially when outdoors. as for the ip problem there is none. just use a NAT router. you can have your NAT router take care of the dhcp issues and you will have a permanent IP to the router. the router will however have a dynamic IP which is what the outside world sees.
NAT is good for securtity and sharing an internet conection while only paying for one addy.
================================= wireless
this is a different story. i would use fibre becasue wireless doesnt really reach the distances that they claim. if your going to use wireless over any distance then you must use 802.11a! 802.11b doesnt reach as far or work as fast (not that speed matters for then net but its nice...). if your houses are right next to each other then just make tincan ateneas and use 802.11b or ether net out the window, otherwise its not really worth the money.
