| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
It is not antiquated, it works, but there are other reasons it is no longer used as often.
The phone company now has systems which detect your dialing activities as irregular, and cuts off your phone service instantly if anything such as wardialing is detected. I attempted to handscan some 888 numbers and after going over my 200-250ish number, my phone went dead. Im using Verizon in southern California. I had to go through this bitch ass process to convince billing and fraud department that my phone was beiged.

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
seems to me that wardialing from home was always a stupid idea... regarless of the advances in telco monitoring intellegence/equipment. There are plenty of good places to get a fone jack or splice into a line for a wardial session.
wardriving is taking over where wardialing left off.

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
There's some nifty wardialing software that runs off of a palm III.
It's fun, It's portable, It works on other peoples phone lines with a minimum amount of hassle.
And wardriving is so much more entertaining when you've managed to stick a wireless gateway on someones network...

netstumbler is the one my local 2600 crew uses on their many wardriving sessions. I assume its of decent quality.

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
thanks. i though you only used nix jadded. i was considering netstumbler as my first chioce but i would have liked to play with a linux sniffer since wepcrack is linux only. im hesitant becasue of the shoddy support for pcmcia to begin with and then the challenge of wireless. the new kernel blows for pcmcia. so what card are you using? im thinking or the wpc11 from linksys. its not supported but many people have reported it to work.

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
I do use slackware, I had a bitch of a time getting my card to work at first, and if you just wanna get goin, then netstumbler is where it's at. I haven't checked out airsnort, but I've found wellenreiter to work fine. Once again, the driver issues can be a litte tricky, but if you wanna go full on, thats what I'd recommend.

Re: dont rule out wardailing as antiquated
wellenwriter looks very promising. if it is continued to be developed i think its going to emerge as the premier wireless security tool. also i like they way the author actually comunicates with users on his bbs. that way both parties benefit and the development is faster.
