Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default A few questions...

Alright...let's say that I'm working on hacking a friends computer (for no malicious purpose, I'm just trying something out). I would first connect to his computer in some fashion, and I believe I am going to try AIM direct connect. So then I get to the MS-DOS (I'm working on getting Linux, shaddup ) prompt and type netstat -a, right? This should give me his IP, right? So, then I ping his IP...right (You can see how at this point I'm getting lost). Now, what do I do from here?

I understand that this is a bit of a generality, and I apologize. I am in the process of reading several sites on this subject, but I really haven't found an answer to this question.

Thanks.

Im not quite sure how you are planning to hack into his computer.

Ill lay out a basic attack strategy for you:

1.Ping his computer to get his ip address.
2.Run a port scanner on his computer (or a exploit, vunrability scanner).
3.Now eighter connect via a open port that will offer you root access (eg.telnet) or another port you want to play with or look up exploits availible on the net for the holes you found. If their is no easy way in and im assuming your new to hackin send him a trojan horse and use that to access his computer. Remember to be carefull not to damage his computer and why not ask his permision before doin it.

Don't hold your breath. Personal computers are generally hard to break into, because they seldom don't run any vulnerable services. Get Shadow Security Scanner and scan them, and research any exploits it finds.

If you run linux or windows nt, you can try "Nmap" its a port scanner which is almost invisible since it doesnt make any direct connections. However, since most users dont even know if they are being scanned or what a scanner is. You might just goto google and type in "port scanner" download one, and use it to scan his ports. After that, make a note of what you find. See if any of the open ports are running anything vulnerable. I.E. port 21 is running ftp, so you go find something to attack his ftp service and try to get through.

However, must personal computers arnt running anything that you can even connect to. In this case, you must try to get him to run say a program containing a backdoor. This could be easily accomplished if you can convince him that it is a game you are attempting to send him. The backdoor im talking about is technically named a "Trojan Horse" *hint google hint*.

Remember there is no definite instruction to hacking. There are always new methods, new ways. It is up to you to find these ways, or for others to find them and you to learn them.

One last thing, please dont go and try the trojan method to everyone. it is lame and extreamly childish. I must admit i enjoy seeing my friend panic when his cd rom tray opens and closes, but it really isnt something that you should do.

How about this....
First, go to control panel and open up "Network". Under the configuration tab, in the white box, look to see if you have a component called "File and Print Sharing". If you do then go to step one...if you don't, then do this:
Click the "Add" button. Now click "Service", then "Add". Now choose "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks". There you go.

1).Get his IP.
2). In DOS, type the following:
nbtstat -A 000.000.000.000
(where 000.000.000.000 is his IP)

You will get one of 2 results - either "host not found", which means you need to find another way in, or you'll get a list. If you get a list then it will look something like this:

Name------------Type-------------Status
BKMST <00> UNIQUE REGISTERED
BKMST <1C> UNIQUE REGISTERED
REXLP <03> UNIQUE REGISTERED
REXLP <04> UNIQUE REGISTERED
BKMST <20> UNIQUE REGISTERED
REXLP <4C> UNIQUE REGISTERED

Okay, now see the numbers in the < >? You want one that says <20>. If you get this list but none of the numbers in the < > are 20 then you are screwed and must find another way. If you do get one that says <20> right down the name of that one.

3). Open notepad. Now go to Start > Search > Files Or Folders. Search for a file called LMHOST, or just find it manually (C:\LMHOST). Drag it into notepad to open it there. If you have no LMHOST file on your computer then read below for what to do...
4). Hit enter a few times at the top of the text and type in the IP of the computer you want access to, then hit the "tab" key. Next type in the name of the computer. Hit tab one more time and put in <C:\> (or whatever drive you wanna access).
5). Save the notepad document (File > Save) and close it.
6). Go to Start > Search > Computers, and type in the IP of the computer you are trying to access. It should find a computer named the IP you wanna hack. Double-click that.

***Just open a new notepad document, type in the IP of the computer you wanna hack, press tab, type in the computer's name, press tab, then type in <C:\>. Now go to File > Save. When the Save box comes up name the file LMHOST, and where it says File Type change it from .txt to All Files. Now click save.

Basically all you are doing is making a network connection to his computer. Also, most people don't know enough about computers to turn the File Sharing feature off, and most computers come with it on, so there are A LOT of vulnerable people out there on the net.
Have fun.
