Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Telnet dosn't have a set of commands per se, telnet just allows you to connect to a host computer.

If the host computer dumps you a its *nix prompt, you will neex *nix commands, if it dumps you at a dos prompt you will need dos commands, if it gives you a menu system, you need to follow that system.

or you could be talking about initiation commands, in that case just ignore everything i said.

Telnet is simply a medium used to connect to something. The question you are asking is like asking what commands can i make with my keyboard, then answer is any command you can program.

If you want to learn about telnet and how it works, try the telnet man page by typing "man telnet" in a unix prompt, or by looking at the web.

I think its a miss directed question.

As everyone has been saying telnet is a protocal a means of doing something. In this case opening up a shell on a forgein host. Depending on the host will be a seperate set of commands. Most likely you will be connecting to some kind of *nix system. The typical command paths are: /bin/ and /usr/bin/. Using the list command (ls) on these directories will yeild you the commands. For most commands a manual should exist for them just type:

man command_name_goes_here

to pull up the manual. Also you can try

command --help

And last but not least you could always web search.

telnet is a protocol. that particular unix implementation that you display "the creator" has commands but not all implementations do have commands, at least not those exact commands. telnet program commands are not a standard thing like the protocol level implementation of telnet.

But you do bring up a good point that everyone else pretty much missed, including myself.

what we need to know from Viper is what commands is he looking for? To do what? That would solve his problem better than just telling each other all about telnet.

So viper, what are you really looking for?

and plus there is a difference between the telnet protocal and a program called telnet. Any program can implement the telnet protocal if they liked and not be called 'telnet' thus we have to assume when someone says telnet they mean the protocal.

this a side your point is valid that he could have meant what are some commands for the telnet program.

But i guess its viper's fault for asking a vauge question.
