Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default New to all of this... looking for help

As I posted in the subject line, im fairly new to this hacking thing. I read an article on Totse telling me how to access a person's C drive, but I'm not too sure if its out of date... I have some questions about this

1. is there a program i can download to access a person's ip adress.
2. if i can get directly connected to a person, lets say on AIM or ICQ, how would i get their ip?
3. once i have the ip, is there another program i need to have, or change my settings, so i could type in their ip and have access to their C drive?
4. Im on a cable connection, if the person's computer i hacked into figured out my ip, which is always the same, should I change my IP?

When answering please dont abreviate words in the computer language, but if u do do it like this www (world wide web), and then just use www from there on. As I said before I am quite new so bear with me.

Thanks a lot for any input

"1. is there a program i can download to access a person's ip adress."

Clarify what you mean by accessing an IP address.

"2. if i can get directly connected to a person, lets say on AIM or ICQ, how would i get their ip?"

In a DOS (disk operating system) shell type: netstat -a. This will show all connections made to your computer along with information like the IP address and the port number of the connection. If you type this command before you go and connect to say an aim server look at the listing and then connect to the aim server you will see a new connection and that is the aim server. You use this connection when doing things on AIM. But when you make a direct connection you make a connection with the other persons computer. When talking/sending data to this person you use this connection instead of sending to the server. Now if you netstat when a direct connection is made you can see the new connection and see it is the person you connected to.

"3. once i have the ip, is there another program i need to have, or change my settings, so i could type in their ip and have access to their C drive?"

Its not that easy, im sure there are programs that you can do this with but i don't know of any. Im not even sure if they work anymore, or you need some sort of setup. Most things involve that you get the victim to run the software on their machine. Which could be easy or quite difficult depending on the victim.

"4. Im on a cable connection, if the person's computer i hacked into figured out my ip, which is always the same, should I change my IP?"

Typically cable modems have static IPs, which means they are always the same. If you change your IP it could conflict within the network (the cable modem loop).

When you connect into someones computer by the same token you can find their IP they can find your IP.

Well nevermind, the people i want to connect to have aim, so it will work out.

Ok, i cannot scroll up in DOS , so i cannot see the old ip adresses along with the newly added one... what is the command to scroll up?

As for the cable, that should not matter i guess.

Are there any other useful DOS commands i should know before i go trying to hack into this person's computer?

1.Proto
2.local adress
3.foreign adress
4.state

most follow a pattern but foreign adress is what is important for IP, right? In foreign adress i have some sites im connected to, like 3 IPs and a couple computer: o

There isnt a scroll command, the buffer is only as big as the screen. Im sure you could change this, but its easyer just to run each command in a different window.

Also if you type 'netstat -n > foo.txt' the output of the netstat command will be routed to the file foo.txt (it will replace a foo.txt if it already exists).

You will need to know more than just thier IP to gain access to thier computer, look up some windows exploits.

As for the output of the netstat commnad...

1.Proto - The Protocal used
2.local adress - The origin of the connection (Your IP)
3.foreign adress - The destination (Thier IP)
4.state - What its currently doing

AC96C797.ipt.aol.com:1607 (i changed numbers around in case it goes against something in forums). what do i do with this to get the ip addy?

reverse DNS, or just use ping.
On the DOS command line type: ping AC96C797.ipt.aol.com

One of the first things you will see is that machines IP address.
Here is what I got when pinging www.totse.com:

code:
C:\>ping www.totse.com

Pinging totse.com [206.61.175.254] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 206.61.175.254: bytes=32 time=180ms TTL=241
Reply from 206.61.175.254: bytes=32 time=90ms TTL=241
Reply from 206.61.175.254: bytes=32 time=100ms TTL=241
Reply from 206.61.175.254: bytes=32 time=100ms TTL=241

Ping statistics for 206.61.175.254:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 90ms, Maximum = 180ms, Average = 117ms

let me just add something to the DOS command, a good way to use it is like:
'netstat -an 10 >> n.txt'
Every 10 secs the connections would be written to n.txt, making it kind of a protocol.

The changing of the numbers was needless, everybody knows that 1607 was 5190.
