| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

ATMs, banks, modems
Well, this is odd. I was (still am) at school today and wanted some lunch. Since all the food places on campus do not accept interac i decided to stroll over to the ATM... this is where things get funny. I walk up to the ATM and the display is like so: code:
|-------------------| _| |_ |_|-> A B <-|_| |_|-> C D <-|_| |_|-> E F <-|_| |_| |_| | H-W Config 1 | |-------------------|
That might not look perfect but you get the idea.... hopefully This is odd, I was thinking... So i played with the keys a bit. seemed to be some kind of password entry system. I resisted the urged to guess passwords over and over. I waited around to see if some tech guy was going to come by and continue fixing the machine because it looked like it was in a fixing type state. Thats when I noticed the large upper panel of the ATM was open. I lifted it up. 3 basic peices of equipment. 1) Motorola DDS-MR64 2) DVACS F1F2-L3 3) Small patch panel So.. I stole the manual for the Motorola device which was sitting there. Its a Digital Data Service/ Multi Rate 64. Basically a modem for the ATM network. It was hooked up to the local telco by RJ-48 (yes, 48) connector. It was hooked to the ATM by 25 pin (serial) connection. I doubt the ATM has that much info to pump out or recieve so a serial connection seems logical. Now... what is a DVACS F1F2-L3? It looked like telephone equipment. I wonder... would that modem give access to bank networks? Im sure that the data connection to the CO (Central Office) and then to the Bank is a very secure connection. But, the possibilites. I could just smack my laptop up to the modem one day while wearing a nice "telus" (my local telco) jumpsuit and pretend to be fixing it. There might be cameras. What are the laws on fucking with ATMs in canada anyways? im pretty sure they are harsh and the banks wont go lightly on law suits either... still wondering if its worth it. Anyways, i thought i would just spred any ATM info as it seems to be rather scarce. If you have anything to add, id like to hear it. -- cEnsE evil, corruption and bad taste [This message has been edited by cense (edited 02-26-2002).]

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
Lets just say ATMs give you money, and a way to cheat them would be like cheating the system. And cheating the system is illegal. And with money its highly illegal. Im sure they will not take anything lightly related to ATMs. In the US im pretty sure its a federal crime. In canada i bet its very simular.

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
yep, thats what i figured.. no big deal, i dont want to risk it all over an ATM.
Im at home now, but on the way home from school i walked by the ATM just to check it out, low and behold, the top panel was locked again and it looked like it was a new panel. A lonely "02" was being displayed in the upper left corner with all keys disabled...

Cense would you be interested in selling it? I'm an avid phreaker and not interested in stealing one due to lack of resources. -Andrew (MrSleep)

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
Well... Its NOT the manual for the ATM, its the manual for the modem, just so you know... Motorola DDS/MR64. If you want it, i can get my friend to scan it using OCR technology or something along those lines, then slap it up into a pdf or ps.
Dont pay me, information _should_ be free. Ill get it posted on my website sometime, then i will update this post with a link.
Tell me how you want it: pdf, ps, txt?

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
Ok, screw OCR then, my friend has a flatbed, ill just do it at his house sometime or ask him to do it for me.
You guys want low quality scans for smaller pdf size or a high quality one... how about both? hehe, maybe not, ill see.

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
Because I never scanned the doc I figure I might as well provide something after so long of doing nothing: http://www.arcelect.com/DDS-MR64_DSU-CSU_Manual.htm
I really should not have resurrected this terribly old post... oh well.

-You know how payphones have test codes? (By entering some digits before the payphone number, etc.) Well- what if ATMs had weird test codes?

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
well some of those little ATMs like this one: http://www.entrepreneurexpansion.com/online/images/atm.jpg have a key sequence to enter administrative mode. On ones near my place of living there is a big blue unlabled button. If you hold down that button and press "1" then you get a prompt with two options. ATM mode and Adminstrative mode. If you select admin mode then you are asked for a PIN. I assume its at least a 6 digit PIN but I dont play around with them because its not worth it. As a little side note, this link is VERY interesting... they provide a link to the software that runs on their ATMs, only catch is you have to be a reseller, but if you are already a website hacker... http://www.tranax.com/support/man-sw.shtml Even more fun stuff (although not really that fun): http://www.tvs-inc.com/2100atmmanual.pdf [This message has been edited by cense (edited 08-02-2002).]

Re: ATMs, banks, modems
On some old triton atm machines the pin was 12345678 by default, but i think that was fixed long ago
