| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: Phreaking
besides, phreaking is too easy to catch people doing, thus it is genoside. most of hte phone companies will monitor their phones very carefully and you will get caught trying to do it.

Re: Phreaking
That depends on what you consider "phreaking."
I wouldn't use a blue box but I might play around with a test set and a Pac*Bell jacket.

Re: Phreaking
i think that you are way less likely to get caught for a phreak than a hack. Especially if your using a payphone to phreak. As long as you don't see a white van folowing you...you can always just walk away...

Re: Phreaking
Personally I think you're wrong. Telcos nowadays have built in alarms to most of their COCOT's so really, you're in a constant risk of gettin' caught while doin' feild work. Hell even handscanning will get you in trouble around here

Re: Phreaking
IP is fun enough for anyone Distance yourself from the romance of using a tone generator or even an acoustic coupler and a laptop at a payphone(sets off a red flag too, at least with Pac Bell phones, not to mention is a great way to get jumped or noticed). Don't go around clipping wires. Don't go around sticking oysters into the coin return slot. A whole lot of old text files have really stupid ideas. If you want some ideas for what you can do semi-legally while still staying within the traditional realm of phreaking: learn a lot of cellular phone operating systems, learn how SMS works, learn about TBMA, CBMA, GSM, and fuck analog cuz its stupid, insecure, and was obselete before anyone ever used it. Learn how IP works instead of "phreaking", learn perl, learn more and more about "routers" and less about "switches. Why would anyone want a more focused forum for such intersecting fields as phreaking and hacking?

Re: Phreaking
Oooh, I'm a bit rusty.
If I'm correct, 120 volts AC is what signals your fone to ring, and when the reciever is picked up, the voltage drops to 6v DC. Theoretically, if you were to pump 120v AC into someone's line from the pedestal, you could make their fone ring nonstop.

Re: Phreaking
90 volts AC at 20 hertz when the phone rings, but thats kind of a cute legacy thing dating back to when people couldn't dial phone numbers. And when the phone is picked up, its a range of 6 to 12 volts DC, depending on the sound being made by whoever is speaking.

Why less about switches? Now that VLANS and other new OSI layer 2 stuff is coming up I would be thinking that one should learn about routers AND switches, not either or... besides, since their functions are totally different, a good hacker would know a lot about both. You cant be effective at hacking a router if you know nothing about switching. Anyhoos, I think both hacking and phreakin have their place. Let them both live on. -- cEnsE something for noone and nothing for everyone
