| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
ok. here it is. for any of you who know a thing or to about phreaking i'm sure your heard of the Telephone Network Interface (TNI) box. The little grey one on the side of the house. What would happen if you ran a line from the TNI box and hooked your four phone wires to say, the neighbors four TNI wires? could you pick up your phone and hear the neighbors phone conversations?

Re: Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
If those four wires were connected to a phone, yes.
This isn't interesting at all.

Re: Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
u cant just cross wire ur tni with ur neighbours. y you ask? one, when someone notices, AND IT WONT E THAT HARD youll be in shit upto your ears. two, im not sure what this would cause but im sure it would inhibit both ur phones unusable.
perhaps i misunderstood, and u where talkign about a beige box. (modified phone cord adapted to hook to the tni screws to make outgoing, recieve incoming, and listen in on calls) if so yes u could hear but it would be tricky cuz u know when someone picks up.

Re: Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
I've read a file about something like this except it had to do with 2 crisscrossed wires between to Cocot's, the guy was able to hear the girl on the other line(like 2 payphones over)...Unless you're talkin' about a linesman handset or a beige box, then yes it will work...

Re: Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
i have a linesman handset at home. I think. It's one of those blue phones with the dial pad on the back. I'm afraid to use it though, because i heard that it emits a certain tone across the the wire that the phone company can trace.
I also have been reading up on the beige box. I've been fooling around with some old phones, and i think that i made one without realizing it. only instead of the two wires (red and green on a beige box is it?) mine has four. I attached four wires to the back of a phone jack and put aligator clips on the tips of them. Then i can just attach the aligator clips to the TNI box, and plug the phone in. Hasn't worked yet, but i'm still fooling around.

Re: Some Interesting thoughts on TNI phone boxes
the best boxes to use are either black boxes or blue. I made a black boxe using the componants out of a old phone and it works brilliant i am making a blue at the moment i just need a circuit board to finish it
