| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: Im a newby
You are correct about the "teeech meee 2 h4ck!" shit, no one will answer you and if they do, its flames. Im glad you at least know enough before asking that..
Anways, what you should do is go check out other Operating Systems (as you guessed) and try them out on a 486 or something so you dont mess you working computer before you know what you are doing. Im not going to suggest any operating systems as I think you should figure out which one is good for you on your own.
If you want to become a "hacker" (hahahaha) then go search google and do the research yourself.
One last thing, hacking is not just about getting passwords to accounts you are not supposed to have. Its more about the learning and knowlege. If you love computers and technology then you are already on your way...

Re: Im a newby
You can change what IP is displayed if anyone does a lookup (some firewalls use it)
By random IP adress i Assume you mean changes when you connect Yes they exist, talk to your ISP They are called "dynamic IP" adresses, ones tha stay the same are "Static IP"

Re: Im a newby
Yes it is possible to change your ip address to any number you desire(in a way).
The internet runs on what are called ip packets. Each packet has the ip address of the source computer and the destination computer. Changing the source address will change the ip address of that packet. When the destination computer receives your packet it will think it came from the ip address you changed it too. And therefore reply to that computer. Notice how it is hard to get any replies back. (It is possible to get replies back, but it requires taking over a top level router/switch, which is not easy)
Dynamic IPs are assigned from a DHCP server, mostly used by ISPs. The IP normally falls within an IP block of the ISP, this is why your IP normally resolves to the domain name of the ISP.
And let me get something straight firewalls are a filtering mechanism based on IP addresses and ports. They do no forwarding or routing. If a message makes it through the firewall it goes on to normal channels.
