Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

Default Programmer needed

Um I need some one who can program to make a brute forcer for a server login a chat and file sharing server not like and applett type thing but like you login and put in the password and you can chat basicly so i can get a screen name I want back that some one happened to steal from me if you need any more info on the subject to help you with it email me i have a very small program that logs on to it that you could fuck with to see where the signals or what ever got to go to Pls some one help and not the type where you put in a dictionary file but one that generates the pass and in order so it never repeats i figure it could be a challenge for some one i have no idea how but i figured the smartest person for the job would be here and also make it to where you can change the String that it gets the caracters from from all the keys on the keyboard to all 255 caracters if needed and the max ammount of caracters in the pass are 19 and make it to where i put in the s/n it can be dos or have a gui But pls help i will be willing to help with any info you need on it and make it quick if possible and show on the screen what pass it is trying and stop and tell me what password was found Anything you need to know about it e mail me i dont want everyone exactly what it is brute forceing for cuz if the prog got out that wouldn't be a good thing but if thats the only way you'll do it ok then i also have msn messenger if you need to talk to me whaile doing it Well I'm off Bye.

err, give up. The number of combinations is way too huge to be worth the effort.

Gee thats only a complexity of 255^19 or ~5.3e45. A 1 Ghz process can execute 1.0e9 instructions per second. Divide that out and lets see....5.3e36 given that you could execute a checker algorithm in one clock cycle it would still take 5.3e36 seconds. To convert into hours just divide by 3.6e3. Which is ~1.5e33 hours. Or 1,500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 hours.

I don't think brute force is the best method for cracking the scheme you are trying. As far as to what method you should use I don't know, why don't you try to figure it out. And remember the weakest part of any security system are the people using the system.

Well mostly the user would use the keys on the key board so that would be about 96 caracters and plus the Ctrl+i caracter and most of the passwords would end up being less than 8 caracters and they can also include a space and i know ppl that have them but dont share with annyone and it generates them they have all the good names and my name too.

Well Come on somebody gimme a simple simple brute forcer source code like just the generator like just the brute forcer part so i could edit it like where i can change the nls and shit and to where it makes a consecuitive loop to where it trys it over agian and a word list brute forcer and i will try with that what i can or somebody ask somebody i know it sounds like a dumb idea but ppl learn more through trial and error any c language preferbly c+ or ++ well I'm off bye.

Do you not understand that brute force is NOT the way to do this?

And secondly, it's JUST A CHAT ROOM.. get some reality..

Well any way I already solved the prob so it is Fine now and so what if it is just a chat room I am still here to look for a way to go about doing it don't matter if it is irelivent of not it was still my identity I am entitled to be able to post here the post stays with in the guide lines of the bbs forum on Network security or hacking forum of this bbs so does it matter i could ask how to go about getting the passwords to the members of this bbs it would still comply but who cares do i want to be you? i have some point for going about this anyway.

And she is entitled to tell you, correctly, that Brute Forcing a password with that many possible permutations is an utterly moronic way to go.

If you would stop with the amazingly difficult to read posts for a moment and actually read some of the information people have said here - you would realize that they're trying to tell you about an important aspect of password security. That is, what makes a strong password and what makes a weak password. A strong password should be long enough and contain enough characters to make trying to brute force (or even intelligently force) it a totally impractical solution.

For more information on password security check out this book or you can read this helpful usenix article.

Crap! I mentioned the wrong book. Oh well, the Orange Book mentioned above is cool - it talks about Department of Defense standards for Trusted Computer systems.

Here is the link for the password security criteria (I think it's the red book, but I am not sure): http://csrc.ncsl.nist.gov/secpubs/rainbow/std002.txt
