| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Proxies
Here's a good page that explains how to use proxies. Note the IP logged on every post here. From what I heard, though, Java/Javascripts can find out your true IP address (IP address of your computer). You might want to turn Java off. If you have a dial-up modem it probably doesn't matter since your IP address changes from time to time. With some ISPs, it changes every time you log on. Also, as many of you may know, you can change the IP address when using a cable modem by disconnecting and reconnecting the cable. You could even call tech support at your ISP and see how long they keep IP logs. Does anybody know details on DSL? http://www.geocities.com/dritte123/D_Fproxies.html

Re: Proxies
Whatever your ISP does has zero effect on the IP logged function here, which logs the IP you use every single time you post, whether it changes or not. If I post once with one IP, and then again with a different IP, a moderator or admin can look at those two posts and see those two IPs.
There are ways to get around it, but since Enigma never bans anyone, and is unlikely to redistribute your ip, it's not really worth the effort.

Re: Proxies
A lot of people over at the hive are paranoid about their IP addresses and talk about using proxies. Also, if you link to another site they can usually tell what site you linked from. Do you know if a proxy would hide what url you're looking at from your ISP?

Re: Proxies
Depends on how sophisticated your ISP is.. and how hard they're trying to monitor you

Re: Proxies
Check this out. http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38715-2000Jun21.html Sites that have banner ads usually put Double Click cookies on your hard drive. Do you think its possible that they could be connected with the government without the site administrator's knowledge?

Re: Proxies
A good proxy will hide the URL, but the ISP can still sniff the contents of the site if they really care too since that data is still being fed to your system.. quote: Originally posted by Laboratorio Farmaceutico: A lot of people over at the hive are paranoid about their IP addresses and talk about using proxies. Unless you use halfway decent encryption, which is fairly easily done...

Re: Proxies
Why only one proxy? Visit Multiproxy and download this little proggie! There are good proggies against active contents too. Try Proxymitron or Webwasher...

Re: Proxies
Here's a good list of web based proxies: http://privacy.net/proxy/ I'm trying out iprive now. I gave them fake info and my hushmail email address which I use with a proxy to get into, too. hey_man at the hive recommended privacyx over hushmail because privacyx was located outside the US. I use a couple hushmail accounts (with proxy to get into) because the account seems to be easier to set up. Hushmail is better than hotmail, too. Hackers have been able to get into hotmail accounts. I don't know if that's still possible. Also, hushmail doesn't send your IP address in the email header, from what I heard.
