Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

i got neotrace from a freind just coz im curious, not in the three armed sence but in the "i want to know how stuff works sence" now i do not know the first thing about hacking or really wish to other than for defence purposess but everytime i go on line from a dialup so surelly my ip adress changes everytime i connect someone close to my city pings (hacks?) me also i have been useing norton which various files went missing rendering it useless (i no longer have the instalation disks) does this mean that someone has uploaded a virus that disabled norton and then tells this person when i'm online? thereby hacking me? or am i just being overly paranoid and this type of stuff happens rutinely? as i stated before i have virtually no knolage of this type of thing but this is the ip thats been pinging me 211.62.254.107

Any dialup ISP will have a certain range of IP addresses that are distributed to people when they sign on. If someone were to routinely scan the entire range, then you would see yourself being pinged.

I don't know how much this will help, but try going to www.visualroute.com and DLing their trial program. If you trace the IP you got, it'll show you the city it's coming from, so at least you'll know if it's some local twit or some random person from anywhere. As far as what to do about it.. I dunno. Sorry.

A software firewall will help you tell if someone is remotely accessing your computer and put a stop to it. ZDNet has a few good ones to download.

a 'ping' isn't a hack, it's basically a 'hello are you there?' type request from one computer to another.

me also i have been useing norton which various files went missing rendering it useless (i no longer have the instalation disks) does this mean that someone has uploaded a virus that disabled norton and then tells this person when i'm online?

Doubtful, but possible. Make sure you don't have file sharing enabled - it's not uncommon for people to slip in via open shares, delete AV files and then install a trojan or similar nefarious file for later use.

it DOES happen routinely...

as i stated before i have virtually no knolage of this type of thing but this is the ip thats been pinging me 211.62.254.107

I can't seem to get any info from that IP.. no reverse DNS is available, though it looks like it may be coming from bora.net (although that could be the upstream provider - tracert stops 3 hops before the actual IP).. A whois was likewise unsuccesful. If you are really concerned, make sure you have file sharing disabled then visit http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

it's a free online virus scan and will pick up any trojans or virus' you may have.
