| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

a new Virus? Hacker? Script kiddies?
during the last week several people tried to hack/connect my comp by using port 80. But what do they want? Why is everybody using port 80? Ive read the log, really everybody, sometimes 1 every 2 mins. Is there a new virus trying to spread the Internet? And those users dont know about? Is there a new firehole? Whats this all about?

Re: a new Virus? Hacker? Script kiddies?
port 80 is the port that connects to pages. (http). there is so many because of the lots of pages you go to. if you lock port 80, no more web pages.

Re: a new Virus? Hacker? Script kiddies?
like raovq said port 8080 is http. what makes you think it is hackers? it may just be you retriving web pages. do you use an IM program? i think aim is 5190 but i could be wrong about that. also are you using cable or dail up. if your on dail up your system is useless since your ip is constantly changing. unlessof course there is a trogan on your system. periodicly open dos type in "netstat -n" and write down all the #'s.

Re: a new Virus? Hacker? Script kiddies?
anyone else received the "IE security check" mail by Microsoft .NET Passport? I think I got my answer.
What made me think that it could have been Hackers/Script Kiddies: Yes, it happened when I used an IM. Most of them were using a PPP stack and I saw their ISP, so I knew, that it couldnt have anything to do with retrieving web pages. Some of them had a bad IP checksum or faked IPs, some disconnected immediately after I "pinged" them. What made me think that it could have been a Virus: Some used Win98 or Win2000 and seemed to have missed all security patches. So I thought nobody would be that dumb, maybe some new kind of virus is trying to propagate.
But hey, thanks for your help guys!
