Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net.

win 98 SE
unless you want too go to a nix system or becom a mac user windows 98se is the best microsoft system. in my opinion it is by far the most versatile and possible most stable at this point. in the future xp may be more stable when the bugs are worked out but for now i like 98. sure 200 is a bit more stable but you sacrafice so much versatility in software and hardware that its useless. trust me you have the best 9x system out there.

I use 2000 most of the time on my home machine and I have not had ANY problems running the exact same software as I did on 95 or 98. Even all my games are fine.

I dont know why Im not having problems, but I love it.

In my opinion go with Linux

why not just get a second hard drive and run a dual boot? keep 98 on c drive and put a new os an d. try some differnt stuff out. that way if it sucks you can always be back on windows 98 in a matter of minuets.

IMHO keep 98 on another drive but use LINUX hands down. Nothing beats it. Period.

Linux is the biggest peice of shit there is. If you insist on straying from Microsoft products, use a BSD variant.

BSD??? Why not tell him to use freaking O/S 2. And as for LINUX, it is one of the most versitle, stable and powerful OS you can get. Try running a Beowolf system using MS's pathetic and outdated Terminal/Server setup, Windows NT my ass. If you haven't heard Microsoft is gearing up to create their own version of LINUX.

Get with the program eth0 before the program gets you! Next thing you will be saying is that Apple's hardware design is shit as well.

Lol...@ the apple thing.

Getting another drive as syphon suggested seems like a good idea. Its funny though, eth0 in the first person i've seen that say linux is shit. Must had a really bad experience with it.

Get SuSE or Mandrake if you're afraid of the Linux install. In my experience though, if you know a fair amount about computers, installing most Linux distros isn't that bad. Get Slackware if you want to be cool... It's got Slack, y'know. It won't change you from a pink, but it's a start in the right direction.

Personally, I prefer BeOS because it is no longer being developed.

I wouldn't use BSD for a desktop machine. Maybe a server or firewall. Windows 2000 is what I use for creative work.

That's the final word!

Oh yeah! Windows is better than Linux if you don't know shit.

I used and advocated the use of linux for about three years until i tried FreeBSD. I have since then used NetBSD and OpenBSD, all three better than any linux distro i have tried. No disfiguring accident with linux operating, no death or anything, i simply hate linux with a passion.

Yes, BSD is great for what it does. However, Linux does the desktop thing better.

CASE CLOSED!

The deal with solaris though is that SUN does not have to take into account any of the

if this hardware, then this, else this
if this configuration, then this, else this

Sun already knows EXACTLY how all their hardware works and can code much more efficient code for it.

Linux on the other hand is trying to cover _ALL_ the hardware out there, and while doing so is not always getting it working super nice like Sun.

Same goes for Macs and SGI, etc

If you are working with crappy PCs for desktop use, then I say Linux all the way.

eth0 says linux sucks in comparison to FreeBSD. well sure, in many ways it does, but on a home machine where strict BSD rules and regulations are brutal overkill, any unwitting user is going to die twice as fast as on linux.

Maybe the reason eth0 had a better experience with BSD is the fact that he/she already knew some UNIX by then.

UNIX wars are endless. There is always someone out there with more of the facts then you that will show you why the UNIX variant you use sucks compared to something else... I know ive been told Linux sucks many times...

The point of this matter is:

When changing OS, play around with what interests you and make the choice of what is better for you.

No one is going to tell me that I should use BSD over Linux because its SOO MUCHHH BETTTER. Its all relative.

Feel free to comment on my ridiculus rants.
