linux software recommendations
so, i installed mandrake 8.2 about an hour ago, and after having to download some drivers to get my winmodem to work (i ordered another linux compatable modem too, should be here in a few days) im curious as to what you guys use for typical shit... ftp client? cd burning? IRC? dvd/vcd/svcd playback? i know of a few programs out there for each, but am interested to see what some of you use and recommend. also feel free to include any other software you use and find handy, im up for anything and would like to pimp it out like my xp partition is. eventually ill kill the xp partition, but for now while im learning im keeping it incase i fuck something up and need to get online or whatever to find a fix. thanx.

Re: linux software recommendations
The only browser worth using is Mozilla (or maybe one of it's derivatives that I haven't tried - Phoenix? Galeon?)
For music, try XMMS (basically a WinAMP clone, but works fine)
I don't know about for DVDs, but xine plays MPEGs/AVIs/etc. pretty well. There's mplayer too, but I don't think they release binaries and I don't think you want to compile it yourself.
edit: I hate goddamn UBB code.

Re: linux software recommendations
web- galeon music- XMMS irc- KVirc image- the gimp
j0662 recomended some perfectly fine apps but i would not recomend them for you jung since they are for more advanced users. in particular lynx and BitchX, they are both non-graphical, lynx doesnt display images on the web and although BitchX is great there are alot of little things to learn about it where you dont need to know anything to use KVirc.

Re: linux software recommendations
IRC - bitchx(cli) xchat(gui) network tool - nmap (de facto) FTP client - ftp or gftp text editor - nano(cli) nedit(gui) IM(all) - everybuddy icq - gnomeicu browser - galeon or mozilla window manager - icewm or windowmaker
simply what I choose to use.
