If you don't mind the size then go for the hard drive one. You won't be able to fit as many songs on a minidisc.

Very true, harddrive players hold more and have faster data transfer. If, however, you do mind the size, try either a flash or a sandisk mp3 player, they don't hold as much and are slightly slower when sending songs to the player, but they use less batteries and are smaller.

mini disks kick so much ass it makes me want to flip out. trust me man mini disk is what you want.

i can upload and download mp3s to it if i want. and i have a cd/md home deck to transfer music on too. i use that the most. get a md with the usb hook up. and or a home dech and you will never want one of those lame ass mp3 players or cds again

peace

btw i can get about 4cds worth on one md when compressed but the things are small enough that i just use the home deck to rib cd's straight to md and carry two with me. sounds better anyway mp3 can get kinda shaddy. and mp3 riped to by my home deck, non cmpressed, is for all intensive purposes cd quality.

The netMD would be the one to go with. It would not be chunky like a harddisk player and would sound better. If you want to take a lot of songs you could buy a whole bunch of inexpensive mini disc. It would beat carrying around about 30hours of mp3s on the harddisk player.

If you're a music purist, there is no choice. Go MiniDisc.

For most, though, it's not that easy.

MDs are like futuristic CDs. They can hold 80min of damn fine quality sound, they're cheaper than flash or harddrive equivalents, and they're small, well-designed, and virtually shockproof. You can get MDs for about $1.50 a disc. Yes, it's more than CD-Rs, but MDs are rewritable. It's a much simpler rewrite than RWs, too. With recent enhancements to the technology, you can compress the music. At the 2x compression, the sound is comparable to your average MP3. At 4x, it just plain sucks. The NetMD system has great potential, but the software absolutely blows. MDs are very good for recording, as well. It's easier to swap MDs with a friend than upload/download between two MP3 players.

A HDD jukebox has its own pros, too. You never have to swap discs. Transfers can be much faster. Some of them double as portable hard drives. They're generally heavier and bulkier than an MD unit, though. They never have battery life as good as MD. The huge variations between brands can make it risky, and each has different upload/download procedures.

So, it depends on the type of person you are. I think MD rocks ass.

take it from someone who has owned both, the software makes or breaks the product.

hard disk players are infintly better than mindisks aside from the size issue and some durability (which isnt a concern unless you take it snowboarding). why did i get rid of my jukebox? the software sucked! i could no longer upload songs to my jukebox and it was flaky from day one. creatives software is pathetic.

the minidisc deck i own is not net md but from what i hear the metmd software is worse than the jukeboxes because you need to posses the cd before you can transfer the songs. you cannot transfer random mp3's you download off of kazza. maybe it has changed but the last i heard sony use this nazi practice to curb piracy.

all in all tho, i recomend the harddisk player if you can afford it. but certainly not the nomad juke box. ipod all the way

Yes, I am in total agreeance with syphon, harddrives are *so* much better, mostly because of the software. Creative has decent mp3 software support (by decent I mean that it works, nothing more) and their nomad software is horrlble. Most md players tend to be about the same unless you get a highquality one. Personaly, I am not a fan of the iPod, but SonicBlue makes a wonderful harddrive player called the RioRiot.

biot no offense but i have no idea what you just said and i consider myself to be pretty proficient at ebonics.

anyway creatives software is terrible and did NOT work for me most of the time but the jukebox is a quality piece of hardware. i think the iPOD is the cream of the crop because of its size, speed, storage capacity, and apple support. the only reason to buy anythign else is purely economic (or being afraid to use yuppy hardware) since its fairly expensive compared to everything else.

All I understood from this was "buy an md player because they rock, they just do"
What great reasoning...

I like my Rio 800 128 MB, Wish it was a Rio 900 384 MB though, after that I would get a creative nomad jukebox.

The main reason I wouldent want a MiniDisk if I got a MP3 player is because they suck battery's much faster...

What are you mumbling about, Chibi? MD players typically have three times the battery life of a jukebox. The cheap ones will go thirty hours...
