Default Pressing the button versus Start>Shutdown

What happens when you hold down the button(newer computers) and shut it off that way, different form going to start, shutdown, then shut down computer? Scandisc comes up, but isn't that because the computer thinks something went wrong??

Pressing the button usualy initiats the shutdown process on the computer, with newer motherboards. However if you force a shut down by holding the button down for 5 seconds it is like pulling the cord, but without the electrical risk. Pressing the button and doing a start>shutdown are almost the exact same thing. Just don't hold it down unless its a freez up.

You are still force killing the power, stopping the hard disk magnets where they are. This could potentially cause damage and thats what scan disk is checking for. This usually doesn't result in damage otherwise we would be buying battery backups like they were hotcakes.

It won't do physical damage, that's impossible, but stopping hard disk operations half-way through something could guff up your data. Whenever I have to do that and don't let scandisk run cuz I'm a pin I get free space errors, which sucks.
