Default xf86config question.

Hi guys... dont know if this is the correct forum for this, hope so!

I recently purchased a used pile of parts, and ended up with a 1.3ghz athlon xp, with an nVidia geForce2, and am using this as my linux workstation/server. It has a 60 gig hd and cd/rw and cd, and the venerable floppy driver so here goes...

q 1.) tried to setup X and i cant figure out wtf im doing wrong here, as ive never had any *major* complications w/X and mores specifically xf86configurations.

ok im running a sony cpd-100sf monitor and set my vsync at 800*600 @ 60hz (which is kinda "default" imo) hsync 50-100. Cant find any specific info on refresh rates for this monitor anyway so...

used the nVidia 256 generic drivers, having the tarballs for the latest drivers on my dos side of this disk.. anyway.. cant get a combination of anything to work as far as video output goes and ive been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get access to the tarballs on the dos side so i can unpack them and install them against my current xf86config so i can eliminate device interface as a prob.. any help here?

what i need to do is get into x, install current drivers-> proceed as usual -or- figure out a common dir that linux and dos share?!?

Post your X error log.

About getting the tar files: download the new driver ON your linux machine using the console based browser lynx. Either that or recompile your kernel for fat/vfat support.

no internet connection to that computer as of yet, in the process of expanding my lan here. procured a linux by the name of RedHat 8.0 today, heard it was pretty well set up and i can set rpm's for the drivers onto the burned disk so im gonna try that. you pretty fluent unix/linux wise cense?

o ya i got into x used the nvidiaDDR driver at low res and refresh, and discovered the 2gig enviroment limit in slackware wasnt gonna allow me to do what i had intended in the first place.. so ill try redhat (full featured linux) and take it from there.

I'm no master but I try to keep up with it all.

What environment limit are you talking about? If you are talking about memory, its not slak, its the Kernel. To change that you have to recompile the kernel to support large memory.

indeed you have to recode and recompile, i was referring to the hard disk space limit set by slackware more specifically dragon, i was wanting to see any driver interface problems i was going to have and albeit i found one. cant wait to install redhat on it. got MAJOR plans for it. glad to hear that you keep up on unix/linux, Ill need all the second opinions i can get... ive got a killer idea im wanting to implement, and going about setting it up will probably be more work than my little neurons can handle all at one time. thnx
