grrr to suse 8......i cant get it to work on my pos compaq....when i go to instale it freezes half way through nomatter what options i pick from the instale menu...this is really pissing me off becauce i really want to set up a couple of linux pos boxes and maybe config theme with beowulf to see what they do...any who just thought i throw that out there

Have you searched for any known issues with suse 8 and your crapbox compaq? If there are issues, it could very well be documented out there.

If not, try another distro and see if it is a kernel issue or suse install issue.

Any details? There is the possibility that some people here can help, if you provide the necessary information.

Why are you slagging Compaq and prepackaged computers? I've got a Compaq notebook and I don't have any problems with it.

I believe falcon was refering to desktops, its much harder to customize your laptops and its almost necessary to get a brand name. As for desktops, most of the prepackaged deals are not worth it, they tend to use low quality parts and void the warrenty once the drive is formated (and lots of other nasty catches). Building your own computer is more worth while, but if you don't have the time to learn it or if you just don't care enough goto a computer chopshop and get yourself a custom job there.

if you call up compaq tech support with any problems of blue screens and such, you will be instructed to use a full restore, which is format and resintall windows except with the pre packaged restore cds. this effectively voids your warranty, and the guy even tells you so.

That's really quite sad.

My parents got a compaq free of this university my mum works for, and I've hated them since. All the freaking drivers that came with it run about a million apps that have no purpose whatsoever and decide that they need to access the net while they chew some RAM. I agree with Zok about the rest.
