keyword censorware workaround
heres an idea to try and work around keyword searching censorware.
okay, what you do is make a cgi script to search for the words (for example-sex) and replace it with a friendly equivilent or ascii (). it would also have to work on the meta tags (assuming that the censorware does that too) and change them. i don't know cgi (nor do i have the need to do this) but from what i gather it would work.
it would just be a proxy that alters the undesirable bits. it would just be like babelfish, only it actaully has a use.
what do people think?

Re: keyword censorware workaround
Good idea! A unicode translator like that might have to be done instead of ASCII but im not quite sure on how unicode works so I cant say much about that.
What you would have to do to create that kind of CGI is to build a lookup table for every printable character that you want to "translate" and then replace every instance with the alternative character in the lookup table. This is exactly what you just said...
You could either use a recursive or iterative algorithm to do this but I believe a good recursive algo would work faster on todays high power boxes.
You can use perl to write CGI, I dont suspect such a script would be hard to write at all, just constructing the lookup table which would take some time.
Definately a good idea.

Re: keyword censorware workaround
And thus, that makes it a bad idea? An idea is not invalidated due to the fact that it has been thought of before or that the idea can be used for evil...

Re: keyword censorware workaround
Why would someone want to go to such lengths for something so trivial?

Re: keyword censorware workaround
i don't get it. wouldn't it work, or has it been done before?
"Why would someone want to go to such lengths for something so trivial?" it wouldn't be hard to do, considering the amount of free cgi scripts offered for download, it wouldn't even take any knowledge. those filters are really annoying, blocking every second site without telling you why. i don't have to deal with any now, so i don't care, but someone else might.
it would also stop domain name blocking, and unless there is a third thing that censorware does, it would make the software useless.
