Re: Linux *shiver*
If you can't find out for yourself, then linux is not for you. Try some research, I'll bet it would not take any longer than a minute on google. (By the way, google changed their banner, anybody notice?)

Re: Linux *shiver*
Most packages install with a series of commands along the lines of ./configure && make && make install
If this doesn't work, most packages have a file named INSTALL or README in the main directory (or a doc directory). These should have information about how to install it.

Re: Linux *shiver*
Ok, after messing with it awhile, and then playing dungeon seige.... whenever I use the ./<file name> command it says Permission denied and yes I am using the root account, AND ILL NEVER GIVE UP ON LINUX!....
edit: OK SCREW THAT! the permission denied only happens with readme files oddly, what I really need to know is where I can get like the shell that has the "wish" command in it, I belive it has something to do with TCL/TK or something... any help?

that is so unture and is probably why you still use windows. the linux comunity is always willing to help if they can and no one should be afraid to ask for help.

Re: Linux *shiver*
As a matter of fact, syphon, I have 3 linux boxes sitting next to me as we speak. One runs slackware which I tend to use for a web/ftp server, one is running redhat (though I don't use this box as much as I should), and the other is a win/lin box running xp and mandrake. And back to my point, if he can't figure out how to use linux on his own, I can only imagine how much trouble he will have doing other simple opperations.

Re: Linux *shiver*
Someone already said this, but i'll repeat it for clarities sake, to compile and install a source program you generally change to the base directory of the source code and type './configure ; make ; make install
./configure - runs a script called configure , which sets up the source code, checking your computer has everything it needs to compile it.
; - just seperates the commands
make - Is a program which will compile your program for you.
make install - installs the compiled program.
If this fails, read the error message and/or read the README and INSTALL files.
If it says permision denied, which it shouldnt if you just unzipped a tgz then you need to change the permisions on that file. TO do this you use the chmod commad.
syntax: 'chmod 755 README'
Permissions are calculated in a funny way.
a file may have permissions of -RWXR-----. This should be interprited as the following The first character is a special attribute, used to mark directories and the like.
The next three are permissions for the owner R - Read(4), W - Write(2), X - Execute(1). I have given each option a numerical value. To choose the combination of attributes you want, you write the total of the appropreate numbers.
For example, 7 gives full Read, Wrtie and Execute. 6 gives Read Write but no Execute. 5 gives Read and Execute, but no Write 4 gives Read but no write or execute 3 gives Write and execute, but no Read 2 gives only write 1 gives only execute
The next thee numbers are the RWX values for people in the same group as the file owner.
The final three values are for the world, ie. everybody. All are calculated in the same way.
And so, to follow the above example, the command 'chmod 755 README' gives the file README RWE permission to the owner, But only RE permissions to everybody else.
Since I'm on the topic, you may also need to use the chown and chgrp commands.
'chown Foo README'
Changes the owner of the file README to Foo.
'chgrp users README'
Changes the group of the file README to users (which is the defualt group for most linux systems)
