are there viruses that can go deeper than the hd?
my computer still randomly restarts. last time it did, when it booted back up, it displayed something about "/debug/assignment3.obj first allocation unit is not valid /assignment3.cpp first allocation unit is not valid" that was just the c++ project i was working on. but its not just that, one time it was something bout an mp3, another time it didnt say anything.

Re: are there viruses that can go deeper than the hd?
Sounds like you may have some bad sectors on your hard disk. Try running scandisk to find out. If you're certain it's a virus it could be hiding in the MBR. Run fdisk /mbr from the DOS prompt to clear it.

Re: are there viruses that can go deeper than the hd?
I would advise against deleting the MBR (Master Boot Record) because i am not sure whether your computer will be able to automatically replace it. Without your mbr you will end up in dos, the bios, or without anything at all.
Chunkmiester Before trying anything that could fuck up your pc back up everything that you couldn't live without.
Maybe a mod could help this guy out with some advise?

Sounds exactly like a corrupt sector. Usually scandisk will find it, tell you it's screwed, then chop the bad parts out and leave you with an ultimately useless fragment. Sounds like your source is toast.

I say you back up, delete your partitions and reinstall. That's always fixed weird stuff for me.
